CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Senior John Schmidt and junior Mike Parton both collected four hits and the Washington College baseball team pounded out 17 hits in a 15-5 Centennial Conference victory over visiting Johns Hopkins Tuesday afternoon. The Shoremen improve to 7-6 overall and 1-2 in the Centennial, while the Blue Jays slip to 10-4, 1-2.
Hopkins jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a one-out home run by senior Paul Long, but Washington quickly answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning and built the lead to 12-2 after six innings in cruising to the victory. Zach Huba's two-run double highlighted the four-run first for the Shoremen, who added two more runs in the third on an RBI-double by Jim Barossi and a run-scoring single by Parton.
Long added a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 7-2, but Washington, which had added a run in the fourth, tacked on another in the fifth and plated four more in the sixth to build the 10-run lead. Mike DeBartolome's RBI-double was the big hit in the sixth for Washington, which also got an RBI-single from Schmidt in the inning and added a pair of runs on a Hopkins error. Schmidt later singled home a run in a three-run seventh for Washington, which snapped a 15-game losing streak against the Blue Jays with the win.
Rob Sanzillo added a solo home run in the seventh for the Blue Jays and Long completed a solid day at the plate with a two-run home run in the ninth to finish the scoring for Hopkins.
Ryan Lanpher took the loss for the Blue Jays as he allowed six hits and six runs in 2.1 innings of work. Four Blue Jay relievers were unable to keep the damage down as they were touched up for 11 hits and nine runs over the remainder of the game. Long was 2-for-3 with four RBIs to lead the way for Hopkins, while Sanzillo added two hits and scored a pair of runs as well.
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Wednesday as the Blue Jays host Shenandoah in non-conference action at 3:30 pm.
