WESTMINSTER, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team, ranked #9 in the Atlantic South, shutout the McDaniel Green Terror 9-0 Thursday afternoon. It was the fifth straight win for the Blue Jays who improved to 10-2 overall and 4-2 in Centennial Conference action. The Green Terror fall to 3-10 overall and 0-7 in conference play.
Hopkins opened the match with a sweep of the doubles matches to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Freshman Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) and sophomore Tanya Gulnik (Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas Johnson) paired for an 8-2 win at first doubles. The duo improved to 7-3 overall with the win over Danielle Magid and Katie McLean. At second doubles, freshman Debbie Blass (Bridgeport, NY/Chittenango) and sophomore Stephanie Carr (West Hills, CA/La Reina) paired for an 8-3 win over Emily Taylor and Whitney Hines. The duo improved to 2-0. And at third doubles, sophomore Holly Clare (Skillman, NJ/Montgomery) and senior Jill Seidman (Arlington Heights, IL/Buffalo Grove) combined for an 8-4 win over Katie Seibel and Georgina Kafes. It was the pair's first match together.
In singles play, the Blue Jays swept all six matches to complete the 9-0 win. At first singles, #10 Matava moved to 9-1 with a straight-sets win over McLean. She won 6-0, 6-0. Gulnik, ranked #25, won at second singles to remain unbeaten at 11-0. She beat Magid in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Blass improved to 2-0 at third singles, with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Taylor. Carr, playing her first match this season at fourth singles, beat Hines 6-2, 6-1 to improve to 2-0 overall. Clare, playing in her first match this season at fifth singles, defeated Seibel 6-2, 6-1 to improve to 3-1 overall. And at sixth singles, playing her first match of the season, freshman Johnna Sheu (Troy, MI/Troy High School) beat Kafes 8-4.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, April 15 as the Blue Jays travel to Bryn Mawr. The Centennial Conference match is set for noon.
