PITTSBURGH, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team, ranked 10th in the Atlantic South region, fell 8-1 to Carnegie Mellon on Sunday. The Tartans are ranked #4 in the region and 14th nationally. The loss ended the Blue Jays six-match win streak. Hopkins falls to 11-3, while Carnegie Mellon improves to 13-5.
In doubles play, the Tartans jumped out to a 3-0 lead by sweeping all three matches. Allison Liu and Kelly Nakamura won the first match of the day at second doubles, beating junior Becky Busch (Winnetka, IL/New Trier Township) and sophomore Stephanie Carr (West Hills, CA/La Reina) 8-2. At first doubles, freshman Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) and sophomore Tanya Gulnik (Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas Johnson), ranked #14 in the region, lost 8-4 to Mona Iyer and Amy Staloch, who are ranked #1 in the region. And at third doubles, Carnegie Mellon completed the sweep. Samantha Schultz and Clare Weiss defeated junior Priya Puri (Wayzata, MN/The Blake School) and senior Jill Seidman (Arlington Heights, IL/Buffalo Grove) 8-5.
In singles play, sophomore Mary Gorski (Birmingham, MI/Shrine Catholic) earned the lone win for the Blue Jays, winning at sixth singles. She beat Weiss 6-1, 6-4 in the first match of singles action. The Tartans went on to win the remaining five singles matches to take the win. #4 Staloch defeated #13 Matava 6-4, 7-5 at first singles. Nakamura won at fourth singles over Busch 6-4, 6-2. At second singles, #17 Iyer defeated #23 Gulnik 6-2, 6-1. It was the first loss of the season for Gulnik who is now 13-1 in singles play. At third singles, Liu beat Seidman 6-4, 6-0 and at fifth singles Puri lost to Schultz 7-5, 6-4.
Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, April 18 when the Blue Jays travel to Dickinson. The Centennial Conference match is set for 3:30 pm in Carlisle, PA.
