EWING, NJ - The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team handed The College of New Jersey a 6-3 loss on Sunday afternoon to snap TCNJ's 13-match win streak. TCNJ had not lost a dual match sine April 9, 2005 until today. With the win, JHU is now 7-2, while TCNJ now stands at 10-1. The Blue Jays have now won seven of their last eight matches.
Christina Contrafatto teamed at #1 doubles with Jackie Gavornik to beat freshman Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) and sophomore Tanya Gulnik (Frederick, MD/Gov. Thomas Johnson), 9-8 (7-4). Haley Kutner and Kristen Turturiello paired to defeat freshman Debbie Blass (Bridgeport, NY/Chittenango) and junior Becky Busch (Winnetka, IL/New Trier Township) 8-6 at #2 doubles. Senior Jill Seidman (Arlington Heights, IL/Buffalo Grove) and junior Priya Puri (Wayzata, MN/The Blake School) paired to beat Kim Lee Lum and Karen Shih 8-6 at third doubles. The Lions took a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
Matava defeated Contrafatto 6-3, 6-4 at first singles and is now 6-1 this year. At second singles, Gulnik remained unbeaten with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Kutner. Turturiello got a match back for the Lions with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Puri at the #3 spot. But Hopkins went on to win at fourth, fifth and sixth singles to take home the 6-3 win. Busch defeated Gavornik 7-6 (3), 6-2. Seidman beat Lindsay Katzel 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 and sophomore Mary Gorski (Birmingham, MI/Shrine Catholic) beat Ann Wright 6-2, 6-1.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, April 5 against Gettysburg.
