Final Stats

BALTIMORE - Johns Hopkins pitchers worked nine innings without allowing an earned run and got support from a four-run third inning en route to a 7-2 win over Mary Washington in non-conference baseball on Thursday afternoon at JHU Baseball Field.

After the 23rd-ranked (ABCA/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper) Eagles capitalized on a first-inning Hopkins fielding error with a two-out homer from senior catcher Lee Rubin, Blue Jay pitchers retired 25 of the next 28 UMW batters, allowing just one hit from the second inning on. Senior right-hander Tim Denning (3-0) completed six innings in his fourth start of the season, allowing just three hits while striking out four.

Sophomore righties Brian Duddie and Nick Erardi finished off the win, combining to toss three hitless innings of relief. Duddie set down all six batters he faced in order, while Erardi worked a scoreless ninth.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third, the 12th-ranked Blue Jays went to work, as sophomore catcher Tony Margve drew a lead off walk to set the table. After senior left fielder Bryce Baumann singled to right center and sophomore shortstop Jonas Fester coaxed another free pass, sophomore third baseman Todd Emr got the Blue Jays on the board with a two-RBI single to tie the affair at two. Senior right fielder Gary Rosenberg, who went 3-for-4 with three batted in, broke open the game with another two-RBI rip, giving the Blue Jays all they needed.

Fester and Margve added insurance by way of the solo homer, as Fester hit his fourth of the season in the fifth inning and Margve his second in the sixth. Both finished 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

For the Eagles, freshman right-hander Wes Hayden (4-2) absorbed the loss, allowing seven earned runs over six-and-a-third innings.

Johns Hopkins (25-6-2) enters the final weekend of Centennial Conference play, starting things on Saturday (April 29) with a doubleheader at Muhlenberg. The Blue Jays close out their home schedule on Sunday (April 30) when they host the Bears of Ursinus in a double-dip.
