Hopkins Drops 10-6 Decision to #2 Wheaton

PHOENIX, AZ - The Johns Hopkins baseball team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to #2 Wheaton College by a 10-6 score on Monday afternoon. The Lyons used three runs in the bottom of the eighth to break open a one run game and capture the victory over the Blue Jays (3-1).

Wheaton jumped on Blue Jay starter Ryan Kuhlman for two runs in the first as Brandon Leonard and Scott Guillerault knocked homeruns in the inning. Hopkins jumped back on top in the top of the third inning as the Blue Jays tailed four runs. Senior Nick Venezia singled and came around to score on a single from junior Jon Solomon. Solomon and senior Rob Sanzillo scored in the inning off a double from junior Rob Pietroforte. Pietroforte plated the Blue Jays fourth run of the inning off an RBI double from junior Todd Emr.

Jason Clucas homered to left to lead off the home half of the fourth inning. Wheaton then tied the game and went ahead by three with four runs in the fifth inning. Jake Yagjian's RBI double tied the score before Robert Foote had an RBI single and Clucas hit his second homerun of the game to put Wheaton up 7-4.

The Blue Jays got one back in the top of the sixth as with one out Emr had a triple and came around to score on senior Ian Christie's RBI single. Hopkins cut it to a one-run game in the seventh as Venezia reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a groundout from junior Jonas Fester.

Wheaton had an answer for Hopkins offense in this one as the Lyons reached Blue Jay senior Brian DeLeo for three runs in the eighth. Leonard had an RBI single for Wheaton and Yagjian singled through the middle to score two.

Kuhlman suffered the loss for the Blue Jays after going four and two thirds of an inning, striking out seven and surrendering seven runs. Louie Bernardini recorded the win going five and a third innings and surrendering five runs.

Emr was the only Blue Jays with multiple hits on the day as he went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Pietroforte had two RBIs while Venezia scored two runs on the day.

Hopkins faces Brockport State on March 13th at 4 p.m. MT.
