Box Score

MESA, AZ - The Johns Hopkins baseball team used a six-run second inning to break open a 2-2 tie and defeat Denison 12-5 on Friday afternoon in Mesa, Arizona. The Blue Jays (7-2) won their third straight game behind junior Rob Pietroforte's 3-for-3 performance at the plate including three runs scored and two RBIs.

After both teams tallied two runs in the first inning, the Blue Jays offense then got going in the bottom of the second. Tony Margve led off with a double and came around to score on double off the bat of Matt Benchener. Benchener scored on a sacrifice fly from Jonas Fester. Jon Solomon scored on a Pietroforte single and Ian Christie capped things off with a double to left field that scored Pietroforte and Rob Sanzillo.

Denison would tally two in the top of the third and another in the top of the fourth to make it an 8-5 game. The Blue Jays responded by plating three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Highlighting that inning for the Blue Jays were Lee Bolyard's RBI double and Margve's RBI single.

Hopkins scored another run in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score 12-5.

Ryan Kuhlman had a strong day on the mound for the Blue Jays as he went seven inning, allowing the five runs, three of which were earned. He struck out four and walked none on the afternoon. Troy Testerman took the loss for Denison as he went two innings and surrendered eight runs.

Pietroforte led the Blue Jays at the plate while Christie was 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored and Bolyard was 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs.

The Blue Jays are back in action on March 17th when Hopkins takes on Keene State at 10 am MST.
