GETTYSBURG, PA - Junior Ryan Kuhlman threw eight strong innings to lead the #19 Johns Hopkins baseball team past Gettysburg on Friday afternoon. The Blue Jays (19-4, 8-0 CC) won their fifth straight contest and remain undefeated in Centennial play.
Gettysburg got on the board in the bottom of the first as Sean McGee reached on an error to lead off the inning. McGee came around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Michael Donohue. That was the only run of the game, Gettysburg would tally.
Hopkins took back the lead in the top of the third as freshman Lee Bolyard reach via a walk and came around to score on junior Jonas Fester's RBI double. Fester would later score on a passed ball in the inning to make it a 2-1 game after two and a half innings of play. Hopkins would add another run in the fifth as senior Ian Christie singled home junior Jon Solomon.
The Blue Jays added two more runs to their total in the sixth inning. Bolyard had a sacrifice fly to score junior Tony Margve in the inning. Fester contributed his second RBI double of the day to score junior Matt Benchener. The Blue Jays would add another run in the seventh and two more in the eight to make it an 8-1 final.
Kuhlman was strong on the mound for the Blue Jays as he threw eight innings, allowing nine hits and one unearned run. He improves to 5-1 on the year with one strikeout and two walks. Will Kleva suffered his first loss of the year on the mound as he went five innings and surrendered five runs.
Fester went 2-for-5 out of the lead-off spot with two RBIs and one run scored. Margve was 2-for-5 with two runs scored while Benchener had a pair of doubles on the day and finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.Sanzillo had his hit streak snapped at 17 games while senior Brett Izzo extends his to 15 games with a single in his final at bat and Solomon extended his hit streak to 12 games.
Hopkins returns to action tomorrow when it hosts Ursinus for a key Centennial Conference double-header. First pitch of game one is set for 12:30 p.m.
