CARLISLE, PA - The #19 Johns Hopkins baseball team used three first inning runs to jump out to the early lead and defeat Dickinson College 10-2 on Tuesday afternoon in a windy Carlisle. The Blue Jays (22-4, 11-0 CC) won their eighth straight contest and remain the lone undefeated team in the Centennial Conference.
In the first inning, Jonas Fester and Jon Solomon reached and came around to score on a Rob Pietroforte triple to left field. Pietroforte's triple was his fifth of the year, which is a new career-high for the junior. Pietroforte crossed the plate on a ground-out from Brett Izzo.
Hopkins added to its 3-0 lead with a run in the fourth as Izzo led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Ian Christie's groundout. The Blue Jays made it a 5-0 game with another run in the fifth inning.
Dickinson finally reached Blue Jay starter Ryan Kuhlman for a pair of runs in the seventh inning.
The Blue Jays responded with four runs in the eighth inning as the first four batters of the inning reached and scored. Solomon and Rob Sanzillo had reached via a single and a walk before Pietroforte delivered his second triple of the game. Izzo had an RBI single to score Pietroforte and later came around to score a run of his own.
Hopkins would add one more in the ninth as Nate Adelman led off with single and came around to score.
Kuhlman threw seven innings, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out six. He improves to 6-1 on the season and got the 15th victory of his career at Hopkins. Junior Greg Gotimer recorded another solid outing from the pen as he threw two scoreless innings to complete the win for the Jays. Matt Eonta took the loss for Dickinson, as he went four innings and allowed four runs.
Pietroforte was 3-for-5 at the plate with a pair of triples and four RBIs on the day. Pietroforte is just one triple shy of tying the single season record for triples at seven. Izzo was 2-for-4 on the day with a double and two runs scored. Fester extended his hit streak to nine games with a fifth inning single.
Hopkins returns to action Thursday, April 19th when Messiah comes to JHU Baseball Field. First pitch on Thursday is set for 3:30 p.m.
