Margve's Home Run Leads Hopkins Past Messiah, 9-2

BALTIMORE, MD - Junior Tony Margve's home run in the sixth inning broke open a 2-2 game and lifted the #19 Johns Hopkins baseball team to a 9-2 win over Messiah on Thursday afternoon in Baltimore. The Blue Jays (23-4) won their ninth straight contest with the win.

The Blue Jays tallied single runs in the first and second innings to take an early lead in the contest. Messiah tied the game with a pair of runs in the fourth inning.

Hopkins broke open the game in the sixth inning as Margve hit a one-out home run to left field to make it a 3-2 game. Senior Ian Christie followed that with a walk and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Junior Nate Adelman punched a single down the right field line to score Christie and came around to score on a RBI single from junior Jonas Fester. Junior Jon Solomon had a single to right field in the inning to score sophomore Dave Garber, who had reached after being hit by a pitch. Fester capped the scoring in the inning by scoring a wild pitch.

The Blue Jays added two more runs in the eighth inning as senior Rob Sanzillo hit a two-out single and Rob Pietroforte and Margve walked to load the bases. Sanzillo and Pietroforte would score on wild pitches in the inning to make the final score, 9-2.

Pat Steffee went five innings and surrendered two runs on the day. Ryan Kealy followed Steffee in relief and picked up the win after throwing 2.1 innings and not allowing a hit. Henry Striegl and Brian DeLeo pitched scoreless relief the rest of the way to close down Messiah. Jon-Mike Richards took the loss for the Falcons after going six innings and surrendering seven runs.

Solomon was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI while Margve was 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBIs. Fester extended his hit streak to 10 games with a single in the sixth.

Hopkins returns to action tomorrow when Dickinson travels to JHU Baseball Field to complete the season series between the two squads. First pitch between the Red Devils and Blue Jays is set for 3:30 p.m.
