EWING, NJ - The Johns Hopkins baseball team fell to The College of New Jersey on Monday afternoon by an 8-2 score. The Blue Jays (14-4) were held to just five hits in the loss and had a four-game win streak snapped.
TCNJ jumped on Blue Jay starter Joe Zaccaria for a run in the bottom of the first inning. Jeff Botti reached on a single to right field and scored on a sacrifice fly from Gerard Haran.
Zaccaria and the defense held TCNJ off the scoreboard until the fifth inning. Botti reached on a single and came around to score the first run of the inning for the Lions. Andrew Cosgrove and Bill Kropp added RBI singles and PJ Anzelone contributed a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0 in favor of the hosts after five.
Botti continued his hot day at the plate for TCNJ as he knocked a two-run homer to right field in the bottom of the eighth.
Hopkins got on the scoreboard in the top of the ninth. With two outs in the inning, Ian Christie worked a walk and Lee Bolyard was hit by the pitch. Tony Margve then singled to center to score Christie and Matt Benchener followed that with a single to load the bases. Dan Merzel was hit by a pitch during his at bat to force in Bolyard with the Blue Jays second run. That would be all Hopkins could manage though as TCNJ claimed the 8-2 victory.
Bob Buskett claimed the victory after throwing seven innings and allowing just three hits. Zaccaria picked up his first loss of the season after going five innings and allowing six runs, three of which were earned.
Margve had one of the Blue Jays five hits and also picked up an RBI. Rob Sanzillo and Brett Izzo each picked up one hit to extend their hit streaks. Sanzillo now has a 13 game hit streak while Izzo's streak reached 11 games.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, April 4th when it host Washington College for a Centennial Conference match-up at 3:30 p.m.
