BALTIMORE, MD - The No.15 Johns Hopkins women's tennis team won its sixth straight match on Thursday, defeating Dickinson 8-1 on a blustery afternoon in Baltimore. The Blue Jays improve to 8-2 overall and 5-0 in the Centennial Conference, while the Red Devils fall to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
Hopkins earned wins at first and third doubles to take an early 2-1 lead in the match. At first, freshman Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township High School) and sophomore Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) won 8-4 over Erica Tobias and Amanda Kaplan for their sixth straight win. Freshman Ellen Berlinghof (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) and junior Tanya Gulnik (Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas Johnson) defeated Hana Thomson and Kat Hood 8-6 at third. Dickinson picked up its only point of the match with a 9-7 win at second doubles.
No.11 Matava won in straight sets at first singles, defeating Tobias 6-0, 6-1. Gulnik, Berlinghof and senior Becky Busch (Winnetka, IL/New Trier Township) also won in straight sets. Gulnik won at fourth, beating Annie McGillicuddyy 6-2, 6-0. Busch defeated Maya Ginsberg 6-0, 6-3 at fifth. No.48 Berlinghof won over Newall at sixth, 6-0, 6-2. No.16 Bhamidipati and No.21 freshman Amanda Schubert (Richmond, VA/Mills E. Godwin) won on tie-breakers at second and third respectively. Bhamidipati beat Thomson, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7) for her sixth straight win. Schubert won her fifth straight by defeating Kaplan 6-1, 4-6, 10-1.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday, April 6 when the Haverford Fords visit Baltimore. The Centennial Conference match is set to begin at 4:00 pm.
