Kean Uses Late Rally to Defeat Hopkins, 6-4

BOYERTOWN, PA - Kean University put four runs on the board in the bottom of the eighth and defeated the Johns Hopkins baseball team, 6-4 in NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional action on Friday afternoon. The loss snapped a seven game win streak for the Blue Jays (37-10).

Hopkins got on the board first in the contest as senior right fielder Brett Izzo led off the bottom of the second with a single. After Izzo stole second, senior second baseman Ian Christie singled to right to put runners on first and third. Junior DH Tony Margve then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Izzo.

Kean tied the game in the bottom of the second as Kevin O'Neill doubled and Ryan Clark scored on the play.

The Blue Jay offense got cooking again in the top of the fourth as Izzo led off with a single and advanced to third on Christie's single. Margve then stepped to the plate and ripped a three-run homerun to left to give Hopkins the 4-1 lead.

The pitchers then took control of the game as Chez Angeloni and Joseph Augustine were throwing outs. Kean got one back in the seventh on a pair of singles to make it a 4-2 game after seven.

The Cougars were able to put four runs on the board in the eighth inning as Perry Schatzow scored on a passed ball with two outs. Angeloni then allowed a walk and a pair of singles as Kean made it a 4-4 game. The big blow of the inning came off the bat of Dan Mattonelli who had a double that scored two runs and gave Kean a 6-4 lead.

Hopkins had a runner on in the top of the ninth but was unable to get the man home and fell 6-4.

Both pitchers threw a complete game on the day as Augustine picked up his ninth win of the year after striking out 11 Blue Jays. Angeloni fell to 4-4 on the year as he gave up 12 hits and struck out four.

Hopkins got a good performance from the fifth, sixth, and seventh batters in the line-up, a combined 7-for-11 on the day. Izzo was 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Christie extended his hit streak to 12 games after going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Margve had one hit on the day, the home run to left field as he knocked in all four Blue Jay runs. Junior shortstop Jonas Fester was 2-for-4 with three stolen bases.

Hopkins will return to action tonight at 8 p.m. against Gwynedd-Mercy. The winner will advance to the regional championship against Kean.
