GETTYSBURG, PA - Senior right hander Brian Duddie (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel) threw six strong innings of one-run ball as the #15 Johns Hopkins baseball team recorded a 10-5 victory over Gettysburg on Tuesday afternoon in Gettysburg, PA. The Blue Jays (18-4, 7-1 CC) pounded out 18 hits in route to the victory.
Hopkins got on the board in the first inning as senior third baseman Todd Emr (Westwood, NJ/Saddle River Day) and senior catcher Tony Margve (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) each had RBI singles. Margve's hit was the 100th of his career.
The Blue Jays used a two-out rally in the fourth inning to put four more runs on the board. Sophomore second baseman Lee Bolyard (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) stroked a two-out single through the left side to get the rally started. After back-to-back walks loaded the bases, sophomore Brian Youchak (Pittsburgh, PA/Vincentian Academy) roped a single to left field that plated two runs. A throwing error by Gettysburg allowed the final two runs of the inning to score.
Gettysburg finally reached Duddie for a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mike Donohue singled home Scott Vladyka with two outs.
Hopkins added to its lead with a single run in the sixth inning to lead 7-1 after six innings of play.
The Bullets got two runs back in the bottom of the seventh as Mike Backus had a single to score two runs.
Hopkins got one of those runs back in the top of the eighth as senior center fielder Rob Pietroforte (Brooklyn, NY/Berkeley Carroll) launched a towering home run to center field, his team-leading fifth of the season.
Gettysburg made it an 8-5 game with two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Hopkins made it a 10-5 game with two runs in the ninth on a single off the bat of senior left fielder Jon Solomon (Fairfax, VA/Riverdale Baptist).
Duddie picked up his third win of the season after throwing six innings and surrendering one run. He also had four strikeouts and just one walk. The loss went to Derek Zaleski who surrendered six runs in five innings of work.
Seven different Blue Jays had at least two hits on the day led by Emr who finished 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Margve went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored while Solomon and Youchak were each 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
The Blue Jays will return to action on Thursday, April 10 when they welcome Villa Julie for a 3:00 p.m. home contest.
