HAVERFORD, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team opened its dual meet schedule with a pair of wins on Sunday at the Haverford Invitational. JHU defeated Virginia Tech (23-4) and host Haverford (15-12), but fell to North Carolina (17-10) and Florida (14-13).
Hopkins dominated in the Epee and the Foil, winning by scores of 9-0 in each, en route to a 23-4 win over Virginia Tech. In the Epee, freshman Komal Kumar (Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro) and junior Corinne Warren (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Ludlowe) each won all three of their bouts. In the junior Sofia de Benedictis (London, England/Cheltenham Ladies' College), sophomore Colleen Stone (Woodbury, MN/Math and Science Academy) and sophomore Marian Trumbull (Westport, CT/Hopkins School) each swept their three bouts. While in the Sabre, the Blue Jays just edged the Hokies, wining 5-4. Sophomore Katie Herman (Totowa, NJ/Passaic Valley Regional) clinched the match with a win in her third bout. Herman and junior Mary Vitale (Hampton, NJ/Voorhees) each won a pair of bouts.
In the match against Haverford, the Blue Jays edged out the Fords in the Epee (6-3) and Sabre (5-4), but lost a tough 5-4 decision in the Foil. In the Epee, Kumar, sophomore Lauren Chinn (Honolulu, HI/Punahou School) and sophomore Chelsea James (Lombard, IL/Glenband East) each won two bouts. Vitale won all three of her bouts, including the clinching one, to help JHU take the Sabre.
Hopkins also dominated in the Epee against North Carolina, winning 7-2. But the Tar Heels won the Foil (8-1) and the Sabre (7-2) to take the match. In the Epee, Chinn won all three of her bouts, while Kumar and James each won a pair for the 7-2 win. In the Sabre, Herman and Vitale picked up the Blue Jays lone points. While in the Foil, Trumbull had the lone win for JHU.
Against Florida, Hopkins won seven of nine bouts in the Foil, winning 7-2. But the Gators took the Epee (5-4) and the Sabre (7-2) to just edge out the Blue Jays, 14-13, in the match. In the Foil, de Benedictis and Trumbll each won all three of their bouts to help JHU to the win. Warren and Chinn also picked up a pair of wins each.
Hopkins returns to action at the NIWFA Christmas Invitational in Hoboken, NJ on December 5.
