Johns Hopkins Edges Washington & Lee, 143-119

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's swim team edged visiting Washington & Lee 143-119 on Saturday to improve to 3-5 in dual meets this season. The loss snaps the Generals four-meet win streak as they slip to 11-2 in dual meets this season.

Hopkins opened the meet with a win in the 200 Medley Relay. Junior John Thomas (Montrose, CO/Montrose), freshman Timothy Nam (Forest Hills, NY/Bronx High School of Science), senior Bob Sershon (Chicago, IL/St. Patrick) and junior Teddy Bulakul (Bangakok, Thailand/Hotchkiss) won the event in 1:37.94. Senior Colin Kleinguetl (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood) followed with a win in the 1000 Free, finishing in 9:54.00, more than 13 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Freshman Jonathan Gordon (Potomac, MD/Richard Montgomery) took third in 10:08.69, besting his career fastest time by just over 15 seconds.

Sophomore Alex Hsieh (Beijing, China/International School of Beijing) took second in the 200 Free in 1:47.30, he was followed closely in third by Thomas (1:47.43). Thomas then won the 100 Back by more than two seconds, finishing in 53.34. Nam won the 100 Breast in 1:01.20 with senior John Kegelman (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) taking third in 1:03.14. Kleinguetl picked up his second win of the meet, taking first in the 200 Fly in 1:57.28, with Sershon taking third in 2:00.54 (a season-best).

Bulakul followed with a second place finish in the 50 Free in 22.21, with freshman Eddy Zandee (Kailua, HI/Punahou) taking fourth in 22.51. Bulakul then won the 100 Free in a time of 48.92. Thomas completed the sweep of the back events, taking the 200 in 1:57.59. Nam picked up his second individual win to sweep the Breast events, taking first in the 200 in 2:13.18. Kegelman took third with a time of 2:18.72. In the 500 Free, the Blue Jays took second-third-fourth with freshman Matt Watson (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Prep) leading the way with a time of 4:52.62 for second. Kleinguetl took third (4:53.73) with Gordon taking fourth (4:56.00).

Sershon followed with his first individual win of the meet, taking the 100 Fly in 52.82. Junior Spiros Moisiades (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) followed in second in 53.80. Sophomore Jonathan Pool (Gaithersburg, MD/Georgetown Prep) followed with a second place finish in the 200 IM in 2:00.44, a season-best time. Hopkins wrapped up the meet with a second place finish in the 200 Free Relay. Zandee, Bulakul, junior Chris Whelan (Tewksbury, NJ/Delbarton) and freshman Nicolas Gimenez (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale) swam the relay in 1:28.92.

Hopkins returns to action at the Seahawk Invitational Feb. 11 at St. Mary's. The invitational is slated to begin at noon.
