FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The 21st-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team won five of six singles and two of three doubles matches to upset ninth-ranked Mary Washington on Saturday morning in Fredericksburg, VA. It is the Blue Jays (1-2) first ever win over the Eagles (6-6), snapping a nine-match losing streak.
Hopkins opened the match with wins at second and third doubles to take an early 2-1 lead. At first doubles, Becky Morse-Karzen and Kate Malpeli, ranked fourth in the Atlantic South, defeated freshman Carolyn Warren (Boulder, CO/Fairview) and senior Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) 8-4. At second, junior Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) and sophomore Yasmine Elamir (Saddle River, NJ/Heritage Academy (SC)) upset 12th-ranked Courtney Goimarac and Katie Schafer, 8-1. Junior Ellen Berlinghof (Dresher, PA/Upper Dublin) and sophomore Abby Dwyer (Stuart, FL/Jensen Beach) then won 8-3 at third doubles over Amy Sheetz and Jocelyn Lewis.
In singles action, Hopkins swept the top five spots to take the match 7-2. At first, 11th-ranked Warren picked up her team-best 13th win of the season, beating fifth-ranked Morse-Karzen, 6-3, 6-2. Bhamidipati won at second, beating 14th-ranked Goimarac 6-3, 6-4. Willenborg then won a close battle at third over Schafer, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-3). At fourth, Matava won 7-5, 6-2 over Malpeli. Dwyer then picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win over Michelle Meadows at fifth. And at sixth, Lewis picked up the lone Eagles' singles point, beating Elamir in three sets, 7-5, 1-6, 7-5.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, March 22 when #3 Carnegie Mellon visits Baltimore. The match is slated to begin at noon.
