BALTIMORE, MD - Leading 14-2, the Johns Hopkins baseball team had its Centennial Conference game against Gettysburg under control after four innings and went on to claim an 18-11 victory over the Bullets. With the win in their Centennial Conference opener, the Blue Jays rise to 8-7 on the season and 1-0 in league play. Gettysburg moves to 7-11 (0-1) on the season.
Hopkins exploded in its first inning of Centennial play in 2009, scoring six runs on five hits. Chris Huisman hit a double to score Ryan Biner as Gettysburg signaled a pitching change after just two outs. Lee Bolyard singled to score Dave Garber before John Swarr hit a single to center to score Bolyard and Huisman.
Back-to-back homers by Brian Youchak and Ryan Biner in the third inning gave Hopkins a 10-2 lead.
In the fourth, Garber was hit by a pitch, Huisman walked and Bolyard was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brendan Walsh stepped up to hit a grand slam, giving Hopkins a 14-2 advantage.
The Bullets made a comeback in the fifth, notching five runs on six hits. Cam Riera scored after Vladyka sent a single to center field and Vladyka would come around to score as well before Langhauser hit a homerun with two men on to score three runs to end the inning.
The Blue Jays rebounded in the sixth to score their final four runs. Bolyard doubled to start the inning and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Swarr knocked a homerun to score Bolyard to put Hopkins up 16-7. Dan Merzel and Youchak each hit singles to put runners on second and third after a passed ball. Biner popped out to left field, but Merzel scored on the play. Todd Emr came up next, hitting a double to score Youchak for Hopkins' 18th run.
Stephen Bejsiuk and Sam Wernick each registered their first career at-bats against Gettysburg.
Junior Brian Youchak led the Blue Jays, going 4-for-5, hitting his first homerun of the season.
Senior Matt Goldman earned the win for Hopkins, rising to 1-0 on the season. Goldman threw 5.0 innings and struck out five.
The Blue Jays face the Bullets again on Friday, March 27 in Gettysburg, Pa. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
