BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins baseball team split its final home Centennial Conference doubleheader with Muhlenberg on Saturday. The Mules took game one, 8-7 before Hopkins rebounded with an 18-7 victory over Muhlenberg in game two. The Blue Jays had five home runs on the day and tallied 20 hits in game two alone. The Mules plated four in the sixth inning of game one to win it, but the Blue Jays scored at least one run in each of the eight innings in game two for the 11-run victory. The Blue Jays move to 16-12 (8-5 Centennial) after the doubleheader.
In game one, Eric Hammond, Muhlenberg's leadoff hitter came around to score in the first inning. The Mules loaded the bases in the first, but Harbeck escaped the mess with a strikeout to end the inning.
With two outs in the second, Lee `magic man' Bolyard made it happen with a home run, belting it over the left center wall to put Hopkins on the board, tying 1-1 after two.
In the third, Todd Emr came up with an RBI-double to left center, scoring Ryan Biner.
The Mules tied it up at two in the fourth after Christian Conti sent a solo shot over the right field wall.
In the fourth, the Blue Jays regained the lead after John Swarr hit a double to the center field wall, bringing Jess Sikorski around to the plate to take the 3-2 lead.
The Mules came back in the fifth behind Ed Risener, who hit a double to score Dan Fisher for Muhlenberg's third run. John Kalis hit it hard up the middle to plate Risener.
Dave Kahn came through with a homer after Chris Huisman and Emr each singled to reach. Kahn brought the Blue Jays up 6-4 with two outs in the fifth.
The Mules used a home run from Kalis as part of a four-run inning to take the 8-6 advantage after six to capture game one from the Blue Jays.
In game two, Dan Merzel used Emr's double to the left field wall to score the first run of game two for Hopkins in the first inning.
The rallies continued for Hopkins, as the Blue Jays scored two in the second and one in the third before plating seven to take it away in the fourth.
Hopkins led 11-1 after four, following eight Blue Jay hits in the fourth. Sikorski homered for three RBI after Biner had scored on a Bolyard single. Matthew Bernardi singled to score Brian Youchak and James Teta singled to score Bernardi before Merzel singled to score Teta as the Blue Jays batted around in the inning.
The Mules scored four in the sixth, but couldn't keep up with a blazing Blue Jay offense as the Mules still faced a 15-5 deficit after six. Hopkins went on to take game two, 18-7.
Emr went 6-for-9 on the day, with a home run and two doubles. Brian Youchak had a perfect 4-for-4 performance in game two, with a double and two stolen bases.
Dan Schiffner got the win from game two on the mound, striking out four in five innings.
