LANCASTER, PA - The Johns Hopkins baseball team came up with two big wins over Franklin & Marshall on the road on Sunday in Centennial Conference action. The Diplomats (18-12-1, 11-5 Centennial) were seeded first in the conference prior to the sweep. The Blue Jays (18-12, 10-5 Centennial) won 15-2 and 15-7 to move into fourth place in the conference standings. Senior Todd Emr led Hopkins with eight hits in 10 at-bats, hitting a double and a home run with driving in seven runs on the day.
In game one, the Blue Jays scored two in the first inning with James Teta hitting a single and scoring on an Emr hit. Brian Youchak singled up the right side to drive in Emr. The Diplomats plated one of their two runs of the game in the first inning after a passed ball allowed Andrew Hanson to score.
Hopkins would score three runs in each of the next three innings to lead 11-1 after four.
The Blue Jays scored their final four runs in the top of the sixth inning after Jesse Sikorski opened the inning with a solo shot to center field. Emr homered later in the inning to send Matthew Bernardi across the plate after John Swarr scored on a groundout to shortstop.
The heavy offense continued in game two. The Blue Jays trailed 3-1 after the first inning but came back to tie it at 3-3 in the second. Swarr doubled to score Lee Bolyard who had walked. Swarr would advance and score on a passed ball to tie the game.
Hopkins took the lead in the third, 4-3. Emr singled to open the inning and advanced to second after Ryan Biner grounded out. Youchak stepped up to the plate and doubled deep to center field, allowing Emr to come around to score.
The Blue Jays collected their bats in the fourth inning to plate another three runs and earn the 7-3 advantage. With Sikorski and Swarr on base, Teta singled to score Sikorski. Emr singled to right field to score Teta and Swarr before a fly-out ended the inning.
Franklin & Marshall launched a come-back in the fifth, scoring three runs to make it 7-6. The Diplomats had the bases loaded when Bill Murray came up to the plate to knock a single to earn three RBI on the play.
Neither team scored in the sixth inning, but the Blue Jays would earn another three runs in the seventh. Youchak singled to right field to open the inning, leaving room for Bolyard to smack a homer to right center to add two. Bernardi later reached on a fielder's choice, stole second base and earned the next two bases on wild pitches to score the 10th run for Hopkins, now leading 10-6.
The Diplomats scored their last run in the eighth after Matt Will doubled down the left field line to push Russ Tischler across the plate.
Hopkins never let up, scoring four runs in the ninth inning to seal its second 15-run game of the day.
Emr hit 8-for-10 on the day, while Teta was a perfect 4-for-4 in game one. Brian Youchak went 3-for-4 in the second game of the doubleheader. Starters Dave Fioretti and Chez Angeloni each earned the wins for Hopkins on the mound. Angeloni allowed just one earned run while retiring four batters in 6.0 innings on the hill for Hopkins in game one.
The Blue Jays capped an impressive 14-inning scoring streak, stretching between game one against Muhlenberg and game one against F&M. Hopkins has swept the Diplomats in just six of 15 Centennial doubleheaders.
Hopkins hosts the College of New Jersey on Monday, April 20 at 3:30 p.m.
