Salisbury, Md. - The Johns Hopkins baseball team held the lead on Shenandoah for just one inning before the Hornets turned it on for an-8-2 finish in the first round of the NCAA South Regional Tournament. The Blue Jays (24-15) will face North Carolina Wesleyan at 1:15 on Thursday at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md. Shenandoah (34-8) moves on to play York at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday.
James Teta singled to center field to begin the first and was moved to second on a Dan Merzel bunt. Todd Emr singled to reach and pushed Teta to third, but an overthrow to first allowed him to score for the only run of the inning.
Three runs off of four hits in the second inning put Shenandoah on top, 3-1. The Hornets hit four straight singles with two outs to take the lead after two.
The Blue Jays got an RBI-double from Ryan Biner to make it 4-2 in the fifth, but entered the sixth with a 5-2 deficit to battle.
Kevin Brashears ripped a triple to left field in the bottom of the sixth for an RBI and the sixth run for the Hornets. A balk allowed Brashears to score for a 7-2 Shenandoah lead.
The Hornets got back-to-back doubles from Jon Holcomb and Brashears in the bottom of the eighth, giving Shenandoah its eighth and final run to take the game, 8-2.
Swarr, Emr and Lee Bolyard each had two hits apiece for the Blue Jays. Senior starter Chez Angeloni took the loss on the mound for Hopkins, pitching 6.1 innings and striking out five batters.
The No. 7 Blue Jays head back to Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md. to take on No. 3 seed North Carolina Wesleyan at 1:15 p.m.
