COLLEGEVILLE, PA - The Johns Hopkins Baseball team swept a doubleheader from Ursinus in dominating fashion on a cold day in Collegeville by the scores of 10-1 and 13-0. The Blue Jays combined for 29 hits in the two games while the pitching staff only allowed 13 hits for the Bears. With the wins, Hopkins improves to 14-3 overall and 4-0 in the Centennial Conference. Ursinus falls to 8-9 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
Dave Kahn (New Hyde Park/Herricks) led the way for Hopkins going 5-6 on the day with a home run, four RBIs, and three runs scored. Lee Bolyard (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) had four hits on the day. Chris Huisman (Davidsonville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) had three hits, including a home run, four RBIs and four runs scored. James Teta (Centereach, NY/Sachem) had three hits with three RBIs and two doubles. John Swarr (Radnor, PA/Conestoga) had three hits with four RBIs. Joe Borrelli (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) had two hits, including a double and two RBIs in the nine inning game while also performing his catching duties.
Ben Gresh had three hits for the Bears and scored their only run of the day.
Hopkins took a two-run lead in the top of the first in game one and would not look back for the rest of the day. Huisman launched a solo home run to right and Swarr had an RBI single. The Blue Jays would lead 3-1 after three innings.
The Blue Jays broke the game open in the sixth has they sent ten guys to the plate and scored six runs on six hits. Huisman hit a two-RBI single in the inning and Kahn, Swarr, and Teta each had RBI singles.
Sophomore Sam Eagleson (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) earned the win for Hopkins pitching six innings in the start. Eagleson struck out five while allowing just one run on five hits. Eagleson is 4-0 on the year for the Blue Jays. Freshman Kevin Gillen (Media, PA/St. Joseph's Prep) pitched one shutout inning in relief in his first college appearance.
Steve Cristakos took the loss for the Bears allowing 10 runs, nine earned, in 5.2 innings pitched.
Hopkins jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Swarr had a two-RBI single to highlight the inning.
The Blue Jays added three runs in the fourth on three separate RBI singles and three runs in the fifth. Kahn lead of the inning with a home run to left centerfield and Teta had an RBI double later in the inning. Hopkins would score two in the sixth and one in the seventh to close out its scoring for the day.
Four different Blue Jay pitchers combined for the shutout. Greg Harbeck (Glen Ridge, NJ/Montclair Kimberley Academy) earned the win with six innings pitched and seven strikeouts in the start. Harbeck is now 2-0 on the season. Andrew Pevsner (Calabasas, CA/Agoura), Aaron Schwartz (Cypress, CA/Fairmont Prep), and Chip Harsh (Malvern, PA/Bishop Shanahan) pitched one inning each in relief. Pevsner and Schwartz had two strikeouts each in their respective innings.
The Blue Jays made zero errors in both games.
The Blue Jays return to action tomorrow to take on Gettysburg in Centennial Conference baseball action. First pitch is scheduled to take place at 2:30 pm.
