BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins baseball completed the perfect Centennial Conference regular season with a doubleheader sweep over Haverford by scores of 9-4 and 8-6. Haverford rallied in the ninth inning of game two but could not overtake Hopkins, who had a seven-run lead entering the ninth. The Blue Jays improve to 34-3 overall and a perfect 18-0 in the conference while Haverford falls to 21-14 overall and 12-6 in the conference.
The Blue Jays are the first team to go undefeated in Centennial Conference play since the 2004 Blue Jay baseball team.
Brian Youchak (Pittsburgh, PA/Vincentian Academy) led the way with a 7-for-8 day at the plate, including two home runs in the night cap. Youchak totaled six RBIs on the day. With his seven hits, Youchak moves into second place on the all-time hits list at Hopkins with 230. Youchak passed Todd Emr, who played from 2005 to 2009.
Joe Borrelli (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) had three hits in the second game.
Jeff Butera had two hits and five RBIs for the Fords.
In game one Hopkins jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles by Youchak and Dave Kahn (New Hyde Park/Herricks).
Haverford scored four runs in the top of the second on back-to-back home runs to left field. Charlie Carluccio hit a three-run shot followed by a solo home run by Jake Kaden.
The Blue Jays answered with four in the bottom of to second to lead, 7-4, after two innings. Youchak and Jesse Sikorski (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) had RBI singles while Kahn had a two-RBI double.
Two more Blue Jay runs in the third on a Youchak single made the score 9-4.
Andrew Pevsner (Calabasas, CA/Agoura) earned the win by pitching four shutout innings in relief. Pevsner allowed just one hit and had five strikeouts.
Jonny Williams took the loss for the Fords, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits in 2.1 innings pitched.
Hopkins had 12 hits and committed one error while Haverford have five hits and two errors in the first game.
Haverford took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning of game two when Jeff Butera singled home Matt Liscovitz. The was short lived as Chris Huisman (Davidsonville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) hit a two-run bomb to right field in the bottom of the inning.
The Blue Jays added three runs in the fourth. Sikorski hit a line-drive home run to center field to lead off the inning and two more runners crossed the plate later in the inning.
Youchak hit home runs in the fifth and seventh innings to total three RBIs in the two innings.
Haverford made things interesting in the top of the ninth by plating five runs, four of which came on a grand slam by Butera. Blake Platt (Munster, IN/Munster) then entered the game a recorded two outs, including one strikeout, to record the first Blue Jay save of the season.
Greg Harbeck (Glen Ridge, NJ/Montclair Kimberley Academy) earned the win for Hopkins to improve to 6-0 on the season. Harbeck allowed one run on six hits in 7.1 innings of work.
Bryan Henrick took the loss in game two, allowing six runs, five earned, in 4.1 innings. Henrick had four strikeouts.
The Blue Jays winning streak is now at 27 games. Hopkins returns to action on Monday when the Spartans of York come to Baltimore. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
