29 and Counting, Hopkins Advances in CC Tournament

BALTIMORE, MD - The #2 Johns Hopkins baseball team extended its winning streak to 29 games with a 21-5 win over Haverford in the winner's bracket game of the Centennial Conference Tournament. The 21 runs ties a Centennial Conference record for runs scored in a tournament game. Win the win, Hopkins improves 36-3 overall and Haverford falls to 23-15.

The Blue Jays tied their own record which they set in 2007 with a 21-4 win over Ursinus. Hopkins has won 11 straight Centennial Conference Tournament games.

The Blue Jays will play winner of Swarthmore and Haverford tomorrow in the conference championship.

Hopkins jumped out a 3-0 lead in the first inning after Brian Youchak (Pittsburgh, PA/Vincentian Academy) singled in Chris Huisman (Davidsonville, MD/Archbishop Spalding). Jesse Sikorski (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) then launched a three-run home run to right.

The Blue Jays added five runs in the third after John Swarr hit a bases-clearing double to right center and Stephen Bejsiuk (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) hit a two-run bomb to left.

Haverford exploded for four runs in the fourth inning. Jeff Butera hit a solo home run down the left field line and Charlie Carluccio skied a three-run home run over the right field fence.

Bejsiuk hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth to give Hopkins a 9-4 lead after five innings.

Hopkins extended the lead to 19-4 in the sixth by scoring five runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Matthew Bernardi (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) hit a solo home run to lead off the seventh. Jesse Sikorski (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) hit a two-RBI triple off the centerfield fence and Swarr capped the inning with a two-run home run over the left field scoreboard.

Hopkins then added two runs in the eighth before Haverford scored a solo run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Rickert.

Sam Eagleson (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) earned the win for the Blue Jays to improve to 10-0 on season. Eagleson allowed four runs on seven hits in seven innings of work. Eagleson had six strikeouts in the game.

Dan Hochberg took the loss for Haverford by allowing eight runs on six hits in 2.2 innings pitched.

Swarr went 3-for-5 with a home run, double and five RBIs in the game for the Blue Jays. Sikorski reached base in all five of his plate appearances and went 2-for-2 with a home run, triple, five runs scored and four RBIs. Youchak and Huisman each had two hits in the game as well.

Charlie Carluccio had three RBIs on one hit for the Fords while Louis DeRosa had one two hits in the game.

Hopkins had 18 hits and no errors while Haverford had nine hits and one error.

The Blue Jays return to action tomorrow at 12:00 for the Centennial Conference Championship. Hopkins will face the winner of Haverford and Swarthmore. Hopkins will only have to win one game for the title while the team it plays will have to win twice.
