GRAND CHUTE, WI - The #1 Johns Hopkins baseball team's season came to an end at the DIII College World Series with a 23-8 loss to #9 Cortland. The Red Dragons scored eight runs in the second and again in the fifth while pounding out 26 hits on their way to victory. The Blue Jays finish the season with a record of 44-7 while Cortland improves to 38-9-1.
The 44 wins set the Hopkins' single-season record for wins in a season.
Cortland will have to wait for the outcome of the rest of today's games to see when and who they will play tomorrow.
Khyle Domino led the Red Dragons by hitting for the cycle with four RBIs and four runs scored. John Zilnicki had four hits with four runs scored while Steve Nickel had four hits with two RBIs and two runs scored. Matt June had three hits and three RBIs and Adam Domino also had three hits.
Chris Huisman (Davidsonville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) and Brian Youchak (Pittsburgh, PA/Vincentian Academy) each had two RBIs for the Blue Jays while five players had two hits in the game.
The Blue Jays hopped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Sam Wernick (Dallas, TX/Dallas Jesuit College Prep) led of the inning with a line-drive single to left. Wernick moved to third on a Red Dragon error and scored on a groundball double play.
The lead was short-lived as Cortland scored eight runs, three of which were unearned, in the top of the second inning. Cortland had seven hits in the inning while the Blue Jays made three errors. Seven different Red Dragon hitters had solo RBIs in the inning while eight different batters scored. Khyle Dimino and Andersen Gardner each had doubles in the inning that saw three different Blue Jay pitchers.
Hopkins chipped away with three runs in the bottom of the second. The first three batters reached base as Lee Bolyard (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) and James Teta (Centereach, NY/Sachem) each singled and Joe Borrelli (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) was hit by a pitch. Bolyard and Borrelli scored on RBI walks by Huisman and Youchak while Teta scored on a sacrifice fly by Dave Kahn (New Hyde Park/Herricks).
Dan Kaplan increased Cortland's lead to 9-4 in the third by hitting a home run over the left field wall.
Hopkins scored a lone run in the bottom of the third to again chip away at the lead. Borrelli hit a one-out double off the top half of the centerfield wall. Borrelli then scored on a Teta single that was then misplayed by the Cortland right fielder.
The Red Dragons extended their lead to 13-5 by scoring four runs in the fourth inning. With one out, Adam Dimino singled and Gardner was hit by a pitch. Dimino then scored on a single by Steve Nickel. Khyle Domino followed with a three-run homer just left of dead centerfield.
Cortland added eight runs in the fifth inning. Matt June and Shawn Bailey each had two-RBI triples in the inning while Kaplan had a two-RBI single.
The Blue Jays hit three solo home runs in the sixth inning. Huisman and Youchak went back-to-back with Huisman hitting a bomb to center while Youchak's went out to left. A couple batters later John Swarr (Radnor, PA/Conestoga) hit a home run to left field. This sets a DIII College World Series record for team home runs in an inning.
The Red Dragons scored twice in the seventh inning.
Scott Hartling earned the win for Cortland to improve to 4-1 on the season. Hartling allowed eight runs on 11 hits in six innings. He had one strikeout and walked four batters.
Greg Harbeck (Glen Ridge, NJ/Montclair Kimberley Academy) took the loss for Hopkins to fall to 8-1 on the season. Harbeck allowed six runs, five earned, in 1.1 innings of work.
Cortland pounded out 26 hits and made two errors while Hopkins totaled 15 hits and made three errors.
