Gone with the Wind; Winning Streak Ends at 32 Games

SALISBURY, MD - The winning streak came to an end at 32 games for the Johns Hopkins baseball team with a loss in the nightcap to Salisbury by a score of 6-4 on an extremely windy day in Salisbury, MD. The Blue Jays won game one, 4-2, in extra innings on a Dave Kahn (New Hyde Park/Herricks) home run. Hopkins is now 39-4 on the season while Salisbury is 27-10.

The 2010 Blue Jays now hold the second-longest winning streak in school history, falling just one game short of the 2004 team.

Game one entered the eighth inning with the score tied at two-apiece. The Blue Jays scored in the second inning on a John Swarr (Radnor, PA/Conestoga) sacrifice fly. Swarr then tied the game in the sixth on an RBI double.

The Sea Gulls scored both of their runs in the fourth on a bases loaded single by Ryan Smith that scored two runs.

Kahn gave Hopkins a two run lead after blasting a ball into the trees over the left field fence in the first extra frame. Ryan Scherich (Torrance, CA/Canyon), who relieved starter Sam Eagleson (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) in the seventh pitched a 1-2-3 eighth to seal the win.

Scherich earned the win to improve to 2-0 on the season. Scherich pitched a perfect final innings of the game. Eagleson pitched six innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out four batters.

Mark Peterson took the loss for Salisbury by allowing two runs on two hits in 0.1 innings of work.

The Blue Jays had seven hits and one error in the first game while Salisbury had four hits and no errors.

Hopkins held a 2-0 lead after four innings in the second game of the doubleheader. Joe Borrelli (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) had both of these RBIs with a double in the second inning and a single in the fourth.

Andrew Miller hit an RBI single for Salisbury in the fifth to make the score 2-1 going into the final two innings. The Sea Gulls then pushed five runs across the board in the bottom of the sixth. Matt O'Keefe had an RBI bases loaded squeeze bunt. The Sea Gulls would then score four unearned runs, two of which scored on the play with the error. Fred Kreiger then had an RBI single.

The Blue Jay scored two runs in the seventh on RBI singles from Brian Youchak (Pittsburgh, PA/Vincentian Academy) and Kahn. The Blue Jays had the tying run on second base but could not get the run to come around to score.

Dustin Herbert earned the win for the Sea Gulls by pitching 6.1 innings and allowing four runs on 12 hits. He had three strikeouts.

Blake Platt (Munster, IN/Munster) took the loss for the Blue Jays, allowing five runs, one earned, on two hits in 1.1 innings of work.

Hopkins had 12 hits while Salisbury had seven hits. Both teams committed one error in the second game.

Joe Borrelli went a perfect 3-for-3 in the second game with two RBIs. Kahn had four hits, including the game winning home run in game one, and three RBIs on the day. Youchak had five hits on the day for the Blue Jays.

Chad Wolfe, Ryan Smith, Andrew Miller, Brian Green, and Fred Kreiger all had two hits on the day for the Sea Gulls.
