HOBOKEN, NJ - The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team went 6-0 on Saturday to take its second straight Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC) Championship Sunday. The Blue Jays improve to 17-8 on the season as they prepare for next week's EWFC Individual Championship. Host Stevens finished in second with a 5-1 record on the day, while Haverford claimed third with a 4-2 record. Hopkins also claimed the Foil title, as the Blue Jays went 45-9 in the Foil.
Several Blue Jays also hit career milestones on the day. Junior co-captain Lauren Chinn earned her 200th career Epee win, while sophomore Komal Kumar and junior Colleen Stone each hit the 100-win mark for the Epee and Foil, respectively.
Hopkins opened the day with a 23-4 win over Yeshiva as the Blue Jays swept all three weapons. Senior co-captain Mary Vitale paced the Blue Jays in the Sabre as she won all three of her bouts, while freshman Kathleen Rand went 2-0. In the Foil, Stone, sophomore Diane Duros and junior Jen Hession all went 3-0. And Kumar led Hopkins in the Epee as she went 3-0.
The Blue Jays then beat the Haverford Fords, 17-10, once again sweeping all three weapons. The Sabre and Foil were tightly contested as Hopkins squeezed out 5-4 wins in each. Freshman Katherine Simeon went 3-0 and won the clinching bout in the Sabre. In the Foil, it was freshman Jackie Heath leading the way with a 3-0 slate and winning the deciding bout. The Epee was easier going for Hopkins as the Blue Jays won 7-2 behind a three-win outing from Chinn.
Hopkins picked up its third win of the day in easy fashion, beating Drew 25-2. The Sabre saw the Blue Jays go unbeaten with Rand winning all three of her bouts, while Simeon, Vitale and junior Jenny Lenz each went 2-0. Duros and Hession paced the Blue Jays to an 8-1 win in the Foil as the duo went a combined 6-0. And in the Epee, Warren and Chinn combined to go 6-0 as well to lead Hopkins to an 8-1 victory.
The fourth match of the day proved to be the deciding one as Hopkins defeated host Stevens 17-10. The Blue Jays took the Sabre and the Foil, but the Ducks took the Epee. Rand, Simeon and Vitale each won two bouts to lead Hopkins to a 6-3 win in the Sabre. Junior Marion Trumbull and Heath then went a combined 6-0 to pace Hopkins in an 8-1 win in the Foil. Stevens then took the Epee by a 6-3 score.
Hopkins followed that with an easy 23-4 win over CCNY. Rand and Simeon each went 3-0 to lead Hopkins to an 8-1 win in the Sabre, while Stone and Heath each went 3-0 in the Foil in an 8-1 Blue Jay win. Hopkins closed out the win with a 7-2 decision in the Epee behind a three-win outing from Kumar.
Hopkins wrapped up the day and the title with a 19-8 win over Hunter. The Hawks took a 5-4 decision in the Sabre, but the Blue Jays bounced back to win the Foil (7-2) and the Epee (8-1) to take the overall win. Rand went 2-1 in the Sabre for the Blue Jays. Hession went 3-0 in the Foil, while Trumbull and Heath each went 2-0. And in the Epee, freshman Liz Caris and Chinn each went 2-0 to lead the way.
On the day, Kumar led the Blue Jays with a 14-4 record in the Epee and reached the 100-win mark. In the Foil, Heath went 11-0, while Hession went 11-4. And in the Sabre, Rand posted a 13-4 mark, while Simeon went 12-3 and Vitale went 11-4.
Hopkins returns to action at the EWFC Individual Championship on February 27 in Hoboken, NJ.
