BALTIMORE, MD - The 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team opened its spring slate with back-to-back shutouts of Haverford and Bates this weekend. Hopkins improves to 3-3 overall with the wins as the Blue Jays head west for its spring break trip to California.
Hopkins opened its Centennial Conference defense on Friday night with a 9-0 shutout of Haverford at the Greenspring Racket Club. Freshman Hailey Hogan and sophomore Nandita Krishnan beat Katie Wettick and Alex Ferrara, 8-4, at first doubles. Sophomore Ariel Several and junior Carolyn Warren then won 8-4 at second over Katie Drooyan and Kate Donches. Freshman Abby Clark and junior Courtney Boger lost just one game in an 8-1 win at third over Helen Fisun and Celia Tong.
The Blue Jays completed the sweep by winning all six singles matches in straight sets. Warren dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win at first over Wettick. Krishan then won at second, beating Ferrara, 6-2, 6-0. Hogan won a close first game, 7-5, at third before winning 6-1 in the second set over Fisun. At fourth, Several won 6-1, 6-2 over Drooyan. While Clark picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win over Donches at fifth and sophomore Andrea Berlinghof beat Jordana Bloom 6-3, 6-1 at sixth.
Saturday morning, Hopkins returned to the courts with a 9-0 win over visiting Bates. Hopkins dropped just one game in winning all three doubles matches. Hogan and Krishnan beat Nicole Russell and Meg Anderson, 8-1, at first. While sophomore Yoko Hirase and Warren won, 8-0, at second over Erika Blauth and Kristen Doerer. Boger and Clark also won by an 8-0 score, beating Jenna Burke and Jacqui Holmes at third.
In singles play, the Blue Jays lost just two games in the top three spots en route to a sweep of all six matches. Warren blanked Holmes at first, 6-0, 6-0. While Krishnan and Hogan each lost just one game in 6-0, 6-1 wins at second and third, respectively. Several followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ashley Brunk at fourth. While Clark won 6-2, 6-0 over Russell at fifth. And at sixth, Hirase dropped her first set 6-2, but rebounded to win the second 6-0 and 10-6 in a third-set tiebreaker.
Hopkins will visit 15th-ranked Chapman on Tuesday, March 22, followed by matches at sixth-ranked Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday and Cal State Northridge on Thursday.
