SWARTHMORE, PA - The 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team swept a pair of Centennial Conference opponents on Saturday, beating Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore, to remain unbeaten in the conference at 3-0. Hopkins improves to 5-1 on the year with the wins.
Hopkins took on Bryn Mawr to begin the day and lost a total of just eight games en route to the 9-0 win. The Blue Jays swept through the doubles to take an early 3-0 lead in the match. Sophomore Nandita Krishnan and freshman Hailey Hogan picked up an 8-2 win at first over Vivian Chen and Eliza Perocchi. At second, junior Courtney Boger and freshman Abby Clark beat Elizabeth Olecki and Jenny Vogel, 8-1. Sophomore Yoko Hirase and freshman Brooke Pottish won at third, beating Catherine Austin and Zoe Odenwalder, 8-0.
In singles action, Hopkins took the top four spots in straight sets beforewinning in pro sets at fifth and sixth. Krishnan won at first, beating Perocchi without dropping a game, 6-0, 6-0. At second, sophomore Ariel Several beat Chen, 6-0, 6-1. Hirase won at third with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Vogel. At fourth, Boger won the first set 6-1 before winning the second in a superbreaker, 10-2, over Olecki. Freshman Lauren Fields won 8-0 at fifth over Odenwalder and Pottish won 8-1 at sixth over Austin.
In the nightcap, Hopkins beat Swarthmore, 8-1, to win its 43rd consecutive Centennial Conference regular-season match. The Blue Jays opened the match by sweeping all three doubles to take a 3-0 lead. Hogan and Krishnan dropped just one game in an 8-1 win at first over Emily Rosenblum and Rosie DuBrin. At third, Pottish and Hirase took an 8-4 decision over Aliya Padamsee and Brooke Wilkins. It was a battle at second with Boger and Clark earning a 9-8 (7-3) win over Kelsey Johnson and Luann Cignavitch.
Hopkins won five of six singles matches, with Swarthmore picking up its lone point at fourth on a retirement. Krishnan won her second match of the day, losing just two games in a 6-0, 6-2 win over Rosenblum. At second, Hogan won with just one lost game, beating DuBrin, 6-0, 6-1. Several picked up a straight sets win at third, besting Johnson, 6-4, 6-1. Katie Samuelson won by retirement at fourth. At fifth, sophomore Andrea Berlinghof won in a pro set, beating Cignavitch, 8-2. And at sixth, Fields won 8-6 over Alexis Hickman.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, March 27 at Dickinson. The Centennial Conference match is slated to begin at 11:00 am.
