COLLEGEVILLE, PA - The 13th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team lost just 12 games en route to a 9-0 win over host Ursinus Saturday in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays remain unbeaten in conference play at 6-0 and improve to 8-1 overall while the Bears fall to 0-4 in the conference and 4-7 overall. It is also the 99th career win for head coach Chuck Willenborg.
The Blue Jays dropped just six games in doubles play to take a quick 3-0 lead in the match. Junior Courtney Boger and freshman Abby Clark picked up an 8-1 win at first over Julia Kurtz and Jessica Tyrrell. Sophomore Yoko Hirase and junior Vanessa Charubhumi then beat Jimena Talavera and Heather McMasters, 8-2, at second. And at third, freshman Lauren Fields and sophomore Andrea Berlinghof won 8-3 over Dana McDonough and Mara Berzins.
In singles play, the Blue Jays turned the same trick, losing just six games in 12 sets to complete the sweep. Fields and Clark each won 12 straight games to win 6-0, 6-0, at fifth and six respectively. Berlinghof and Boger were nearly as perfect, each posting 6-0, 6-1 wins at second and fourth, respectively. Sophomore Ariel Several picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win at first, while Hirase won 6-0, 6-2 at third.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, April 3 as the Blue Jays host eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon. The non-conference match is slated to begin at 11:00 am in Baltimore.
