BALTIMORE, MD - The 13th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team won two of three doubles and five of six singles matches to upset eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon, 7-2, at home Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays win their sixth straight to improve to 9-1 on the season and snap a five-match losing streak to the Tartans (10-5). The win is also the 100th for head coach Chuck Willenborg, who is already the winningest coach in program history.
Hopkins opened with wins at first and second doubles to take an early 2-1 lead in the match. Freshman Hailey Hogan and sophomore Nandita Krishnan earned an 8-4 win at first over Laura Chen and Courtney Chin, the second-ranked doubles pair in the Atlantic South. At second, senior Abby Dwyer and junior Carolyn Warren beat Jennifer Chui and Alexandra Tapak, 8-6. The Tartans won their first point of the match at third, as Ashley Herrick and Cze-Ja Tam beat junior Courtney Boger and freshman Abby Clark, 8-4.
In singles play, Krishnan and Hogan picked up straight-set wins to push the Blue Jays lead to 4-1. At second, Krishnan won, 6-2, 6-1 Chin, the fifth-ranked player in the region. While Hogan beat Tapak, 6-3, 6-0 at third. Dwyer then clinched the match for Hopkins with a 6-2, 6-3 win at sixth over Madison Rabson. Chen then made it a 5-2 match with a three-set win at first. Chen won the first set, 7-5, but Warren came back to win the second 6-3. Chen would win the third in a tiebreak, 7-6 (9-7), to take the match. Clark followed with a three-set win at fifth to push Hopkins' lead back to five at 6-1. Clark won a tight 7-5 set over Chui, before falling 6-0 in the second. But she battled back to win a super tiebreaker, 10-8, to take the win. Sophomore Ariel Several closed out match with a three-set, come-from-behind win at fourth. Tam took the first set, 6-4, but Several won the second, 6-3, to force a super tiebreaker to decide the winner. She went on to win, 11-9, to earn the win.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, April 9 at Washington College. The Centennial Conference match is slated to begin at 1:00 pm.
