LUTHERVILLE, MD - The fifth-ranked Tufts women's tennis team beat host and ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins, 5-1, in the NCAA Regional Final on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays finish their season at 17-3 and suffer their first loss this season to a Division III opponent. The Jumbos improve to 16-5 and advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals where they will face top-ranked Amherst.
Eliza Flynn and Lindsay Katz gave visiting Tufts a 1-0 lead as they were the first ones off the court with an 8-2 win at second doubles over senior Abby Dwyer and junior Carolyn Warren. The Blue Jays then tied the match at 1-1 as freshman Hailey Hogan and sophomore Nandita Krishnan beat Shelci Bowman and Julia Browne, 8-5, at first. Samantha Gann and Lauren Hollender then won a marathon, 9-8 (8-6) match at third over freshman Abby Clark and junior Courtney Boger at third to put Tufts back on top, 2-1.
Gann pushed the Jumbos lead to two as she beat sophomore Andrea Berlinghof, 6-0, 6-0, at sixth singles. Katz picked up a point for Tufts at second singles when Krishnan was forced to retire due to injury. Krishnan had taken the first set, 6-1 and was up 4-1 in the second when she retired. Browne, the defending NCAA Singles Champion, clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-1 win at first over Warren.
Hopkins finishes its season with a school-record-tying 17 wins, the fourth time in the last five years that the Blue Jays have posted a 17-win season.
