BALTIMORE, MD - The 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team earned its second straight win over a top-10 team on Tuesday when it beat seventh-ranked Tufts, 8-1. The match was a rematch of last season's NCAA Sweet 16 match, which the Jumbos won to advance to the quarterfinals. Hopkins improves to 3-2 on the season while Tufts slips to 2-2.
Hopkins swept the doubles to take a 3-0 lead heading into singles play. Sophomore Hailey Hogan and junior Nandita Krishnan opened the match with an 8-2 win at first over Eliza Flynn and Lindsay Katz. Sophomore Abby Clark and freshman Shannon Herndon then beat Samantha Gann and Janice Lam, 8-4, at second. Junior Andrea Berlinghof and freshman Stephanie Rettig wrapped up doubles with a hard-fought 9-7 win at third over Rebecca Kimmel and Sophie Schonfeld.
In singles, Hogan pushed the Blue Jays' lead to four with a 6-3, 6-4 win at second over Flynn. It was the 50th overall win of her career. Rettig then clinched the win for the Jays as she beat Nathalie Schils, 6-2, 6-1 at sixth. Freshman Elaine Baik made it 6-0 in Hopkins' favor with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Katz at first. Clark then beat Lam, 6-2, 6-2 at fifth. Gann picked up the lone point of the match for the Jumbos with a win at third over Krishnan. Gann won the first set, 6-4, but Krishnan rebounded to win the second, 6-2, and force a super tie-breaker. Gann prevailed in a marathon breaker that went 15-13. Herndon ended the match with a super tie-breaker win at fourth. She won the first set, 6-3, over Kimmel but then dropped the second 6-2. Herndon would take the super tie-breaker, 10-6, to earn the win.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, March 21 with split squad matches. Hopkins will face fourth-ranked Emory in Atlanta and Dickinson at home in Baltimore.
