CARLISLE, PA - Junior Kyle Neverman drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly to center field to lift the Johns Hopkins baseball team to a 6-5 victory over Centennial Conference foe, Dickinson, Friday afternoon. With the win, the Blue Jays completed the series sweep of the Red Devils.
Junior Matt Ricci rolled into second with a standup double to lead off the ninth inning for the Blue Jays (11-7-2, 2-0 CC) before classmate Adam Weiner laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Ricci 90 feet from scoring. Neverman hit a fly ball to center field just deep enough for Kanen to tag up and cross the plate to give Hopkins a 6-5 lead. Senior Aaron Schwartz came in to pitch to get the last out of the eighth inning and after giving up a lead-off double in the bottom of the ninth, stranded the runner on base to earn the win for the Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the second. Junior Jeff Lynch led off with a single down the right field line and came around to score on a double to deep center field from classmate Chris Vonderschmidt. The Blue Jays are now 9-5-2 on the season after scoring the first run.
Hopkins added two more run in the top of the sixth to take a 3-0 lead. Senior Aaron Borenstein drew a one-out walk before Lynch homered far over the left field fence to bring home Borenstein. Lynch now leads the Blue Jays with 19 RBIs on the season.
Dickinson (12-7, 0-2 CC) got the three runs back and took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. The Red Devils strung together four-straight hits and fielder's choice to push across the first two runs of the game for the Red Devils. After drawing a bases-loaded walk to tie the game, Dickinson scored its last run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to center to take a 4-3 lead. Senior pitcher Sam Eagleson got James Santoro swinging to end the inning.
The Blue Jays answered in the top of the seventh with two runs to re-take the lead, 5-4. Ricci reached on a dropped third strike and Weiner followed with a single to the right side to put two runners on. Neverman laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position before junior Mike Kanen singled up the middle to score Ricci and Neverman.
Dickinson once again tied the game in the bottom of the eighth. Joseph Martinez hit a pinch-hit RBI double to left to bring around Ben Sciambi and knot the game at five.
After the Blue Jays took the lead back in the ninth, Schwartz closed the door on the Devils with two strikeouts and getting Sciabmi to pop up to Lynch at third after giving up the lead-off double.
Lynch led the Blue Jays at the plate going 3-for-5 with two RBIs, a double and a home run and two runs scored. Kanen finished the day with two hits and two RBIs as well. Schwartz earned the win on the mound for the Blue Jays after throwing 1 1/3 innings, striking out three and giving up one hit.
Johns Hopkins returns to action Saturday when the Blue Jays host Franklin & Marhsall in a Centennial Conference double header at the JHU Baseball Diamond. First pitch is set for 12:30 pm.
