GLASSBORO, NJ - The Johns Hopkins baseball team fell to non-conference opponents, #13 Rowan, 9-3, Tuesday afternoon to kick off a five-game road stand before the Blue Jays head to Arizona for their annual spring break trip.
After giving up a run in the first inning, the Blue Jays (1-2-1) got the run back in the top of the third. Seniors Mike Musary and Scott Barrett led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Junior Kyle Neverman drew a walk to load the bases before the Profs (7-0) could get an out. After a fielder's choice to get Musary out at home, senior Aaron Borentstein singled to left field to score Barrett and tie the game at 1-1.
Rowan got the run back in the home half of the frame on a sacrifice fly to retake the lead, 2-1 after three innings of play.
The Blue Jays came right back in the opening half of the fourth with two runs on one hit to take the lead for the first time. Junior Chris Welhelm got hit by a pitch to get on as a one-out base runner followed by a walk to Musary to put two one with two outs. Barrett doubled to deep center to plate Wilhelm and Musary to give the Blue Jays a 3-2 lead. Senior hurler Sam Eagleson pitched a scoreless sixth in his last inning of work.
The Profs came charging back and plated six runs in the bottom of the seventh on six hits and a Blue Jay error. The Blue Jays went through two pitchers to get out of the seventh inning.
The Blue Jays did not go quietly, however, and attempted a come back in the top of the ninth. With one out, the junior Joe Hemmes reached on an error by the third baseman before sophomore Mike Denlinger doubled to put two runners in scoring postion. The Blue Jay attempt at a rally was cut short as Rowan relief pitcher, Marc Magliona pitched himself out of a jam and held off the Jays.
Barrett and Musary each collected two hits while Barrett led the team with two RBI's on the afternoon. Eagleson took a non-decision after throwing six innings, giving up three runs while scattering five hits and striking out two. Sophomore Tyler Goldstein took the loss for the Jays, giving up four runs on four hits while not recording an out.
The Blue Jays return to the field when they travel to York, PA on Wednesday to take on York (PA) as they continue their five-game road trip. First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm.
