Blue Jays Down Spartans, 8-5

YORK, PA - Three different Blue Jays collected three hits as the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays downed York (PA), 8-5, in non-conference action, Wednesday afternoon.

Johns Hopkins (2-2-1) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Junior Mike Kanen drew a walk and came around to score on an RBI-single from classmate Jeff Lynch. Lynch stole second to put himself in scoring position for senior Mike Musary. Lynch came around to score in a single from Musary to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead before the Spartans (3-4) got to the plate.

Hopkins tacked another run in the top of the second when junior Hank Sanders scored on an RBI-groundout from classmate Kyle Neverman.

The Spartans got all three back in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at three. After back-to-back hits to lead off the inning, junior starting pitcher Kevin Gillen forced Colin Porter to fly out to center for the first out of the inning. Nic Long singled to left center to drive home two runs before Dustin Worthman tied the game with a single up the middle.

Lynch hit a sacrifice fly to center to plate Neverman and give the lead back to the Blue Jays, 4-3. Hopkins added three more insurance runs in the top of the seventh on three hits. Neverman and Kanen led off the frame with back-to-back singles before senior Aaron Borenstein was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Lynch doubled down the left field line to drive home Nevermanand Kanen for his third and fourth RBI's of the game. Sophmore Mike Denlinger hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Borenstein and give Hopkins a 7-3 lead after seven innings.

YCP got two back in the bottom of the eighth on two hits but senior closer Aaron Schwartz came in with two one and two outs and got the last Spartan batter to fly out to left field to close out the inning.

JHU scored its last run in the top of the ninth when Denlinger hit into a fielder's choice to second to bring home Kanen to give the Blue Jays a 8-5 victory.

Lynch led the day at the plate for Hopkins, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored. Neverman and Kanen each had three hits while Neverman drove in a run and scored two. Kanen crossed the plate three times for the Blue Jays.

Senior Lucas Henneman got the win for the Blue Jays, throwing 3.1 strong innings, allowing two runs, one earned while scattering just three hits and striking out two. Schwartz earned his second save of the season, throwing 1.1 innings, picking up two strikeouts.

Starter Tyler Alexander took the loss for the Spartans, going five innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks. Alexander struck out one and threw one wild pitch.

The Blue Jays return to the diamond when they travel to cross-town rival, Stevenson, on Friday, March 9. First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm.
