BALTIOMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins baseball team fell to Centennial Conference opponent, Gettysburg, 6-1 at the JHU Baseball Diamond for the first time since 1999. The win for Gettysburg snaps a 12-game losing streak for the Bullets in Baltimore.
The Bullets improved to 15-10 on the season and 4-6 in the Centennial while the Blue Jays move to 17-9-2 overall and 8-2 in the conference.
Gettysburg struck first with two runs in the top of the first on three hits and a walk. After leading off the game with an infield single, Austin Davis stole second and scored on a single from Cory Karagjozi. Nate Simon hit a soft single to third to load the bases with two outs and Scott Zanghellini drew a walk to score Karagjozi. Senior Lucas Henneman induced a ground ball to short to end the inning and stop the scoring threat. The Bullets, however, got all the offense they would need.
Hopkins answered in the home half of the first with a run on two hits. Juniors Kyle Neverman and Mike Kanen hit back-to-back singles to open the frame. Each runner advanced a base on a wild pitch and junior Jeff Lynch drew a delayed intentional walk to load the bases. Classmate Ryan Zakszeski worked a four-pitch walk to score Neverman but Bullet starter Drew Felsenthal worked out of the bases loaded jam and the Blue Jays left the bases loaded.
The Bullets added a run in each of the fourth and sixth innings and two more in the seventh to secure the 6-1 win.
Freshman Michael Grewe worked the only 1-2-3 inning for the Blue Jays, coming out in the ninth and getting two strikeouts and a groundout to Neverman at short to end the day for the Bullets.
Kanen went 3-for-5 at the plate for the Jays with three singles while Neverman went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Henneman took the loss for the Jays on the mound, going five innings, giving up three runs, all earned, on seven hits and two walks while striking out one Bullet.
Felsenthal got the win for the Bullets, one out shy of a complete game, going 8.2 innings, giving up just one run on eight hits and six walks while striking out seven.
The Blue Jays return to the diamond when they travel to Collegeville, PA to take on Ursinus in a key Centennial Conference double-header. The first pitch of the day is scheduled for 12:30 pm.
