CARY, NC - The 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team saw its NCAA Tournament run come to an end Monday afternoon n a 5-1 loss to second-ranked Chicago in the NCAA Quarterfinals. The Blue Jays, who had won eight straight and 13 of their last 14, finish the season with a program-record 18 wins (18-6). The Maroons advance to the NCAA Semifinals as they improve to 22-4 on the season.
Jennifer Kung and Linden Li put Chicago on top with an 8-5 win at second doubles over sophomore Abby Clark and freshman Shannon Herndon. Hopkins answered with a win at third as freshmen Elaine Baik and Stephanie Rettig beat Kelsey McGillis and Megan Tang, 8-5, to tie the match. Kendra Higgins and Carmen VacaGuzman rallied to beat sophomore Hailey Hogan and junior Nandita Krishnan, 9-8 (5), to give Chicago a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
Kung pushed Chicago's lead to two as she beat Baik 6-2, 6-2 at second singles. Higgins then defeated Hogan 6-3, 6-2 to move the Maroons one point closer to the semifinals. McGillis clinched the win at sixth as she rallied from a 5-3 deficit in the first set to win 7-5 and went on to win the second set 6-1 over freshman Kaitlin Pfisterer to take the match.
The season ends for the team but for Hogan and Krishnan, the season will continue. Hogan will participate in the NCAA Singles Championship and will pair with Krishnan for the NCAA Doubles Championship. The draw is scheduled to be announced Wednesday with play beginning Thursday at the Cary Tennis Center. The singles competition will begin at 10:00 am with the doubles set to start at 4:00 pm.
