Rhodes Tops Johns Hopkins in Overtime, 2-1

DANVILLE, KY - One day after tying the game in the waning seconds and then winning in overtime, the Johns Hopkins field hockey team had the tables turned on it. Rhodes (1-1) scored with 39 seconds left in the game to tie the game before winning it just over four minutes into the extra period. The Blue Jays (1-1) open the season with back-to-back overtime games for the first time in program history.

Junior Sarah Henderson scored off an assist from freshman Shannon Parker at 20:45 to put Hopkins on top 1-0 in the contest. It took nearly 49 minutes, but Rhodes found the equalizer on its 14th corner of the day as Sarah Ferguson scored the Lynx first goal of the season. Kat Simpson then gave Rhodes the victory on a fast-break goal 4:07 into the overtime.

It was a tale of two halves as Hopkins had the advantage in shots (14-6) in the first half, while Rhodes had the edge (14-4) in the second. The Lynx finished with a 14-8 advantage in corners. Hopkins got three saves from senior Elizabeth Peijnenburg and three defensive saves from freshman Elena Gresick. Jordan Robinson made six saves in the cage for Rhodes to earn the win.

Hopkins returns to action on Friday, September 7 in its home opener against Eastern Mennonite. The game is slated to start at 7:00 pm at Homewood Field.
