Johns Hopkins Goes 1-5 at Philadelphia Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team went 1-5 at the Philadelphia Invitational on Saturday at Temple University. The Blue Jays earned a 21-6 win over NJIT, while dropping decisions to Sacred Heart (15-12), North Carolina (14-13), ninth-ranked Temple (21-6), Cornell (20-7) and Duke (16-11). Hopkins is now 9-7 on the season.

Hopkins opened with Sacred Heart, dropping a suffering a tough three-point loss. The Blue Jays started out strong with wins in the Sabre (6-3) and Foil (5-4) but an 8-1 loss in Epee gave the Pioneers the win. Freshman Rachel Viqueira and junior Jackie Heath led the Jays in the Foil with two wins apiece, while in the Sabre sophomore Rachel Kalina won all three of her bouts. Against North Carolina, Hopkins lost a heartbreaker by a 15-14 score. The Blue Jays once again won the Sabre (5-4) and the Foil (7-2) but an 8-1 loss in the Epee did in the Jays. Viqueira and Heath combined to win six bouts in the Foil to led Hopkins in that weapon. In the Sabre, Kalina and junior Katherine Simeon each won two bouts.

Hopkins then took on host Temple, ranked ninth in the country, and the Owls swept all three weapons. Heath and freshman Abigaril Delameter each won a bout in the Foil, which Temple took by a 7-2 score. The Owls won the Epee by an 8-1 score, with freshman Kelly Seeger gaining the Blue Jays' lone point. And in the Sabre, Simeon, Kalina and freshman Isabella So each won a bout in a 6-3 loss. Hopkins won the Sabre (5-4) against Cornell, but the Big Red took the Foil (9-0) and Epee (7-2) to take the overall team win. Sophomore Gianna Puzzo and freshman Katie Whitaker each won a bout in the Epee, while Kalina and So combined for four wins to pace the Jays in the Sabre.

JHU picked up a win over NJIT with dominating wins in the Sabre (9-0) and Foil (8-1) though the Highlanders would claim the Epee (5-4). Heath and Viqueira once again led the Blue Jays in the Foil with three wins apiece. Puzzo and Whitaker won two bouts each in the Epee in a tough one-point loss. And in the Sabre, So, Kalina and Simeon each won three bouts in the shutout. Against Duke, which is just one spot out of the national rankings, the Blue Jays won the Foil (5-4) but lost decisions in the Sabre (5-4) and Epee (7-2). Simeon paced the Sabre squad with two wins while Viqueira won all three of her bouts in the Foil and Puzzo added two wins in the Epee.

Kalina led the Blue Jays with 12 wins on the day, posting a 12-6 record. While Viqueira, Heath and Simeon each posted identical 11-7 records. So also finished with double-digit wins, going 10-8 on the day. Hopkins will return to action on Sunday, February 10 as the Blue Jays look to defend their Eastern Women's Fencing Conference Championship. Hopkins, which has claimed the last three EWFC titles, will host the dual-meet championship.
