2013 EWFC Team Championship
BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team went unbeaten in six matches to claim its fourth straight Eastern Women's Fencing Conference Championship on Sunday in Baltimore. Sophomore Rachel Kalina led the way for the Blue Jays with a 17-0 record in the Sabre. Sophomore Gianna Puzzo led the Epee squad with 14 wins and in the Foil, junior Jackie Heath and freshmen Rachel Viqueira and Ashely Lau each won 14 bouts for the Jays.
In addition, Kalina and Heath each reached career milestones, earning their 100th and 200th career wins, respectively. Hopkins (15-7) also took home Top Sabre and Foil squad honors as the Sabre team went 46-8 while the Foil squad went 49-5.
Hopkins opened with a 27-0 win over Yeshiva in round one. In the Foil, Viqueira and Heath each went 3-0 to lead the Blue Jays. In the Sabre, Kalina, junior Katherine Simeon and freshman Isabella So led JHU to a 9-0 win. And in the Epee, Puzzo, freshmen Katie Whitaker and Kelly Seeger each went 3-0. JHU then beat Drew, 25-2, in the second round as the Blue Jays dropped just two bouts in the Sabre. Kalina went 3-0, while Simeon and So each went 2-1 in the Sabre. While in the Foil, Viqueira and Lau combined to go 6-0 to lead the way. And in the Epee, Whitaker and Puzzo posted three wins apiece.
Hopkins won a closely contested match with Stevens, winning the Sabre and Foil by identical 6-3 scores while the Ducks took the Epee by a 6-3 score, to take the team match by a 15-12 score. Kalina again went 3-0 to lead the Jays' Sabre squad. In the Foil, Heath, Viqueira and Lau each won two bouts and in the Epee, Puzzo led the Jays with a pair of wins. JHU won big over Hunter, downing the Hawks by a 24-3 score. Heath and Viqueira paced the Foil squad with a combined six wins while it was Whitaker and Puzzo combining for six wins in the Epee.
Hopkins followed with a 20-7 win over Haverford for the biggest win over the Fords since January 29, 2000. Kalina and So won three bouts apiece as JHU won the Sabre by an 8-1 score. Viqueira won all three of her bouts and Heath and Lau each won two in a 7-2 win in the Foil. In the Epee, Puzzo won the final bout to secure a 5-4 win for the Blue Jays and she went 3-0 in the round. Hopkins closed out the day and secured its fourth straight conference championship with a 20-7 win over the City College of New York. Kalina, Simeon and So each won two bouts as JHU won the Sabre by a 7-2 score. Heath, Lau and Delamater did not drop a bout to lead the Jays to a 9-0 win in the Foil. And in the Epee, the Beavers edged the Blue Jays by a 5-4 score. Seeger and classmate Shiting Liu won two bouts apiece to lead Hopkins.
Kalina improved to 47-14 on the season and also claimed her 100th career win as she now stands at 101-27 in two seasons. Simeon went 14-3 on the day and is now 47-15 for the season and 2287-86 for her career. So also went 14-3 and is now 30-14 in her rookie campaign. In the Foil, Viqueira went 14-1 to improve to 44-13 this season. Heath finished with a 14-2 mark, including the 200th win of her career, to move to 41-15 this season and 209-82 for her career. Lau also went 14-2 on the day and is now 32-19 this season. In the Epee, Puzzo led the way with a 14-1 record and is now 38-23 for the season and 118-61 for her career.
