FORT MYERS, FL - Freshman Carter Burns cruised to a complete game victory in his first collegiate start to lead the Johns Hopkins baseball team to a 3-1 victory over Edgewood Saturday morning in Fort Myers, FL. The Jays collected their second win in as many days in Florida, and improved to 7-1 on the season.
The freshman Burns was spectacular in his debut performance, striking out four batters and holding Edgewood (2-11) to just one run on six hits. He also retired the side in the eighth and ninth innings to close out the game comfortably.
Hitting from the leadoff spot for the first time in 2013, senior Kyle Neverman got things going for the Jays in the first inning with a single to left field. After advancing to second, Neverman was brought home by Colin McCarthy on a grounder through the left side.
Jeff Lynch continued the inning by smacking a double down the left field line to advance McCarthy to third base. Mike Denlinger then chopped an infield grounder to bring home McCarthy and give the Blue Jays a 2-0 advantage.
A pair of leadoff singles by Christopher Casey and Chris Vonderschmidt led to another run in the fifth for Hopkins, as Neverman advanced the duo on a sacrifice bunt. Freshman Kyle Metzger then knocked in Casey with a groundout to third to give Hopkins a 3-0 lead.
The Eagles battled back with a two out rally in the top of the sixth after Burns hit and walked consecutive batters. A Marc Ostrowski single up the middle scored an Edgewood runner to make the score, 3-1.
Burns shut the door on the final three innings, however, as Hopkins held on for a 3-1 victory in a game which lasted just one hour and forty minutes. Lynch and Denlinger led the Jays with two hits apiece. Eagle pitcher Trevor Koehn pitched eight innings in the loss.
Hopkins returns to action tomorrow with a double-header against Pitt-Bradford. Game one is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am.
