ATLANTA, GA - In a match-up of the top two teams in the nation, it was second-ranked Amherst that came out on top with a close 5-4 win over top-ranked Johns Hopkins at the Fab 7 Tournament in Atlanta. The Blue Jays suffer their first loss of the season as they fall to 4-1, while the Jeffs improve to 3-1.
Amherst got off to a strong start by taking two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. Jordan Brewer and Gabby Devlin won 8-5 at first over junior Hailey Hogan and sophomore Elaine Baik. Jen Newman and Zoe Pangalos won a close one at two, taking a 9-7 win over sophomore Shannon Herndon and freshman Sydney Lehman. Junior Abby Clark and sophomore Stephanie Rettig pulled out an even closer one at third, edging Caroline Richman and Safi Aly 9-8 (7-5) to pull the Jays within one.
Newman pushed the Jeffs' lead to two with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Baik at second. Pangalos was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at fifth over Clark. Lehman picked up a quick point for the Blue Jays with a 6-1, 6-1 win at fourth over Sue Ghosh. While Rettig also won in straight sets, beating Devlin 6-3, 6-2 at sixth. Brewer secured the win for Amherst as she defeated Hogan, 6-0, 6-3 at first. Herndon came from behind to win at third, beating Richman 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.
Hopkins is back on the court with another top-five matchup on Sunday, March 24 as the Blue Jays take on the host and fourth-ranked Emory Eagles. The Atlantic South match-up is slated for a 1:00 pm start.
