BALTIMORE, MD -- Jeff Lynch went 2-for-4 with two runs and Adam Weiner was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Johns Hopkins baseball team to a 10-5 victory against Mary Washington on a beautiful day at the JHU Baseball Diamond Saturday. The Blue Jays improved to 5-0 for the first time since 2010.
The Jays recovered from a shaky first inning start by pelting the Eagles with five singles in the second inning to score four runs. Senior Ryan Zakszeski got the run going with a leadoff walk, and promptly scored on a single by Craig Hoelzer. After a Weiner single put runners on the corners, Chris Wilhelm scored Hoelzer with a single of his own through the left side.
The second inning onslaught continued as sophomore Colin McCarthy singled to left field to score Weiner, and Kyle Neverman ripped a hit to left to score Wilhelm. The hot bats gave Hopkins (5-0) a 4-2 lead, allowing pitcher Jacob Enterlin to settle down for four strong innings of work.
After Zakszeski scored again in the third on a single by Weiner, the Jays made Mary Washington (7-7) pay for three costly errors in the fourth inning. Consecutive errors by the Eagles' third basemen on ground balls and an error by the shortstop allowed Hopkins to score four more runs, leading to a 9-2 advantage.
The Eagles were able to mount a bit of a rally in the seventh inning, as it jumped on Hopkins for three runs. Zach Augustine entered the game in a bases loaded jam with no outs, and managed to minimize the potential damage by inducing two groundouts and a strikeout.
Hopkins capped the effort in the eighth inning on an RBI by Zakszeski, who finished 1-for-2 with three walks and two runs. Right fielder T.J. Cretney had three of the Eagles' six hits in the game.
The Jays return to action Monday as it hosts Catholic on the JHU Baseball Diamond at 3:30 pm.
