BALTIMORE, MD -- The No. 18 Johns Hopkins baseball team gave freshman Carter Burns a six-run cushion and the pitcher did the rest Monday as the Blue Jays defeated Alvernia, 6-2, at the JHU Baseball Diamond. Hopkins won its 10th consecutive game to improve to 17-2, while Alvernia fell to 14-8.
The Blue Jays jumped on freshman pitcher Andrew Fisher from the outset as senior Adam Weiner reached base on a walk and then snagged second. Hopkins scored three runs on three consecutive singles with a little help from errors in the Alvernia outfield. Jeff Lynch, Mike Denlinger and Chris Wilhelm did the damage, giving the home side a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
The second inning provided much of the same as Richie Carbone and Chris Vonderschmidt reached base on singles, and then advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Weiner. Kyle Neverman hit a single to shortstop to score Carbone, while Colin McCarthy's double down the right field line scored Vonderschmidt. Lynch added his second RBI in as many innings with a sacrifice fly to plate Neverman and supply the Jays with a 6-0 lead.
The Jays were held to just one hit for the remainder of the game, but the early lead was all Burns needed to earn his second career victory (2-0). The freshman right-hander struck out four batters in seven innings, allowing no earned runs.
The Crusaders did manage to battle back for a pair of runs in the fifth inning when Kevin Bailey singled and Richie Ricciardi reached on an infield error. After Dustin Stuck walked to load the bases, teammate Mike Weinhold singled up the middle to score Bailey and Ricciardi.
Neverman was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Jays, while sophomore Michael Grewe struck out two batters in two innings of work. Ricciardi had three hits for the Crusaders.
Hopkins plays again tomorrow as it travels to Dickinson for a Centennial Conference matchup at 3:30 pm.
