BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Chris Wilhelm went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and freshman Carter Burns allowed one run in seven innings to lead the No. 5 Johns Hopkins baseball team to a 10-1 victory over McDaniel. Winners of 19 straight, the Blue Jays moved to 26-2 (10-0), while McDaniel fell to 16-12 (5-5 CC).
Leading by just a pair of runs, 3-1, heading into the bottom of the sixth, Hopkins exploded for seven runs to claim a resounding 10-1 lead it would never relinquish. 12 batters came to the plate for the Blue Jays, who tallied five hits and three walks in the frame.
The inning began with a double to right center by Ryan Zakszeski to score Mike Denlinger, before Chris Vonderschmidt scored Zakszeski on a bloop single down the right field line. The frame continued despite two outs as Christopher Casey scored Vonderschmidt on a single to left, followed by a pair of walks by Kyle Neverman and Colin McCarthy.
Senior Jeff Lynch then smacked a single up the middle to plate Casey and Neverman, while Chris Wilhelm scored two more runners later in the inning with a single to center.
The Blue Jays led from the outset with two runs in the first frame after an 11-pitch first inning by Burns. Hopkins tallied four singles in the inning, including a pair of RBI hits by Denlinger and Wilhelm.
Hopkins then extended its lead to three runs as Adam Weiner singled to right field and stole second base. Weiner advanced to third on a single by Craig Hoelzer, and then scored on a wild pitch by Pisauro.
McDaniel was able to score its lone run in the sixth when Marty Windisch led things off with a triple over the outstretched glove of the center fielder Hoelzer. Cameron Bahr promptly scored Windisch with an RBI groundout to shortstop.
The Green Terror's success was short-lived, however, as Burns returned to form and finished the sixth and seventh innings. The rookie allowed only two hits and fanned six batters, while Andrew Zigmont and Richie Carbone finished the game in relief.
The result marked Hopkins' 25th consecutive victory over McDaniel, as it improved its team ERA to an astounding 2.39 in 2013. Additionally, all seven of the Jays' everyday starters are hitting .300 or better at the plate.
Hopkins begins a busy week tomorrow as it hosts Widener on the JHU Baseball Diamond at 3:30 on the front end of a six-game span.
