Game Two Box Score
BALTIMORE, MD -- Junior Tyler Goldstein and freshman Carter Burns turned in a pair of strong pitching performances Sunday afternoon to lead the No. 3 Johns Hopkins baseball team to a double-header sweep of Ursinus, 4-2 and 8-2. Hopkins (30-3, 12-1 CC) reached the 30-win plateau for the 15th time in program history.
The Blue Jays scored three runs in the first inning of game one to hang on for a 4-2 victory in game one. Ursinus (6-23, 2-11 CC) managed 10 hits off Goldstein, but the pitcher held the Bears largely at bay to the tune of just one earned run and seven strikeouts in 7.2 innings.
Ursinus pitcher Steve Berardi struggled to find the zone in the opening frame, walking both the leadoff hitter Christopher Casey and then Colin McCarthy. Jeff Lynch then hit the top of the left field fence to secure his 20th double of the season and score Casey. Mike Denlinger hit a groundout RBI to shortstop, followed by an RBI single by Ryan Zakszeski to give the Jays a 3-0 advantage.
The early offense turned out to be extremely beneficial for Hopkins, as the team managed just two hits over the next five innings off of Berardi. The Ursinus starter allowed four earned runs and struck out six batters in seven innings.
The Bears cut into their three-run deficit in the sixth as Chris Jablonski walked and advanced to second. Casey then bobbled a grounder to center field by Alex Manacher that allowed Jablonski to round third and score. Manacher finished 4-for-4 in the game.
Hopkins managed to tack on an insurance run in the seventh after Casey and Kyle Neverman reached base on a single and walk, respectively. Denlinger's single to center scored Casey to give the Jays a 4-1 lead.
Ursinus was able to cut the deficit in half, 4-2, in the eighth inning, but relief pitcher Justin Drechsel shut the door in the ninth for his third save of the season.
--- Game Two ---
Burns allowed just two runs and fanned a career-high nine batters to earn his second complete game and guide Hopkins to a comfortable 8-2 win in game two of the double-header.
The Jays found themselves in uncharted territory early as Jablonski scored teammate Ralph Aurora to give Ursinus a 1-0 lead in the first inning. It was the first time the opposing team had scored first on Hopkins since March 19 against Wooster -- a 20-game span.
Hopkins battled back, however, and scored all eight of its runs between the fourth and seven innings. The Jays scored a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Lynch and another in the fifth on a RBI double to left center by Casey.
Ursinus tied the game, 2-2, in sixth on an infield single, but the veterans answered for Hopkins in the bottom half of the frame as Neverman and Lynch each homered to left field.
The Jays then blew the game open in the seventh with four runs on five hits, beginning with a pair of hits by Zakszeski and Jonathan Hettleman. Adam Weiner and Casey tallied RBIs with a pair of singles, as McCarthy and Lynch notched RBIs of their own later in the inning.
Lynch was 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the contest, while Casey was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. James Hoff led Ursinus with two hits in the game.
Hopkins returns to action tomorrow at Gettysburg as it looks to avenge its only conference loss of the season. The Bullets are currently three games behind the Jays in the conference standings.
