GETTYSBURG, PA - Patrick O'Grady went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs as the No. 3 Johns Hopkins baseball team fell to Gettysburg, 8-1, Monday afternoon in Gettysburg, PA. It was the first road loss of the season for the Blue Jays, who fell to 12-2 in conference play and 30-4 overall.
Hopkins fell behind early as Gettysburg's Al Posch led off the third inning with a single to center. Hopkins pitcher Jacob Enterlin got the next batter to pop out, but Tommy LeNoir followed with a deep double to right center that scored Posch from first and gave the Bullets a 1-0 advantage.
The Blue Jays struggled to string together offense throughout the game, but the team was able to square the game, 1-1, with heads up base-running by senior Chris Wilhelm. The big third baseman reached base on a fielder's choice and then advanced to second on a wild pitch by Gettysburg pitcher Eric Hungerford. Wilhelm easily swiped third on a passed ball, and finished his round-trip after another wild pitch by Hungerford.
The Bullets broke the game wide open, 5-1, in the fifth after capitalizing on a leadoff walk by Posch. LeNoir followed with a sharply hit line drive at Enterlin that caromed off the pitcher's ankle and out of reach of the Hopkins infield. Gettysburg then pounced on the Jays with two RBI singles and a big two-run double by Patrick O'Grady.
Gettysburg added to its lead in the next inning as Thomas Harper put a pair of runners on base with a walk and a hit batsman. LeNoir then struck a ground-rule double down the field line to score a Bullet. Harper struck out the next two batters, but the Bullets knocked in two more runs on an infield hit and an infield error to make the score 8-1.
Hungerford struck out three batters in a complete game effort for the Bullets, as Enterlin allowed five runs in five innings.
Hopkins returns to action tomorrow as it hosts Washington College on the JHU Baseball Diamond at 3:30 pm.
