BALTIMORE, MD - The fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team shut out visiting Franklin & Marshall, 9-0, on a cold and blustery Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial Conference while the Diplomats slip to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Hopkins jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match with quick wins at first and second doubles. Junior Hailey Hogan and freshman Sydney Lehman did not drop a game en route to an 8-0 win at first over Megan FitzMaurice and Anya Sahaydachny. Senior Andrea Berlinghof and freshman Olivia Kasten followed with a win at second as they beat Meredith Lackey and Dana Sleeper, 8-3. Junior Lauren Fields and freshman Staley Smith closed out doubles play after defeating Julia Fiala and Emily Gruenberg, 8-5, at third.
Hogan pushed Hopkins lead to four in the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sahaydachny at first. The win was the 75th overall (35 singles, 40 doubles) for Hogan, making her the 10th player in program history to reach the mark. Berlinghof then clinched the win for the Blue Jays as she won by the same score over FitzMaurice at second. Sophomore Kaitlin Pfisterer defeated Sleeper 6-2, 6-1 at third while senior Ariel Several was a 6-4, 6-4 winner at fourth over Fiala. Freshman Kara McDonough lost just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Lacket at sixth. And at fifth, in the longest match of the afternoon, Kasten pulled out a three-set victory over Gruenberg. Kasten took the first set, 6-2, but lost a close one in the second, 7-6 (5) to set up a super tiebreaker. Kasten prevailed, 10-7, in the breaker to take the win and complete the shutout.
Hopkins returns to the court on Saturday, April 6 as the Blue Jays travel to Collegeville, PA to take on the Ursinus Bears. The Centennial Conference match is scheduled to start at 1:00 pm.
