LANCASTER, PA - Senior Jeff Lynch totaled five hits and three RBIs to lead the No. 12 Johns Hopkins baseball team to a double-header sweep of Franklin & Marshall Saturday in Lancaster, PA. Hopkins (22-2, 6-0 CC) defeated Franklin & Marshall (12-12, 3-3 CC), 7-1, in game one and then edged the Diplomats, 6-5, in game two.
The heart of the Hopkins lineup tallied six hits and junior Tyler Goldstein allowed no runs in six innings to lead the Blue Jays to victory in game one.
Goldstein stymied the F&M bats throughout the contest, holding the hosts to just four hits while fanning five to earn his fifth victory of the season.
Held scoreless through three innings for the first time in 10 games, Hopkins managed to jump on pitcher Brendan DeMond in the fourth as Colin McCarthy earned a leadoff walk and Lynch followed with a single. Mike Denlinger then knocked in McCarthy with a single to center field. As the inning continued, Christopher Casey came up in bases loaded situation with one out and scored Denlinger on an infield groundout to give the Jays a 2-0 lead.
The Blue Jays loaded the bases in the sixth and made the Diplomats pay as they jumped on pitcher Brendan DeMond for five runs. The frame began with a Casey double down the left field line, as Craig Hoelzer and Kyle Neverman reached base with a hit-by-pitch and walk, respectively. A balk called by the home plate umpire advanced all runners, including Casey, to give JHU a 3-0 advantage.
As the inning continued, McCarthy knocked home Hoelzer with a single to left field that effectively chased DeMond from the game after 5.1 innings. Chris Houston came on in relief for F&M, but could not cool the Hopkins bats as Lynch belted an RBI double to deep left and Denlinger slapped an RBI single through the left side to give Hopkins a comfortable 7-0 lead.
F&M cut its deficit to six runs in the eighth as it loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a hit batsman. Matt Mezansky then scored teammate Aaron Gillette with a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Diplomats failed to get any closer, however, as Zach Augustine shut the door in relief with two strikeouts in two innings of work.
The 3-4-5 hitters - McCarthy, Lynch and Denlinger - combined for six hits, four RBIs and four runs in the effort. The Dips' DeMond was tagged for six earned runs, giving up seven hits and four walks.
------
Senior Chris Wilhelm hit his sixth home run of the season to guide Hopkins to a narrow 6-5 victory in game two of the double-header.
Hopkins got things going early against Franklin & Marshall as McCarthy reached base for the 22nd consecutive game with a single to left center. Lynch then crushed a double to right center field to score McCarthy and give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the first.
The Blue Jays then added a run in the fourth after Wilhelm knocked in Lynch from third by beating out a throw from the shortstop. JHU gained a 3-0 advantage in the fifth inning due to a pair of fielding blunders, including a errant throw by pitcher Sean Cosgriff which allowed Hoelzer to score from first base.
The sixth inning provided even more fireworks as Wilhelm walloped a two-run homer to left center field to give Hopkins a commanding 5-0 lead. The dinger was Wilhelm's Centennial Conference-leading sixth of the season.
The Franklin & Marshall offense fired back in the bottom half of the sixth as it loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a hit batsman. Mezansky scored two teammates with a single to right field, before Alex Vescera singled to center to cut the Dips' deficit to two runs, 5-3.
Hopkins answered in the seventh, however, as Neverman doubled to left center and Lynch knocked him home with a single to double the lead, 6-3.
The three-run advantage quickly dwindeled in the eighth when Diplomat hitters Mike Giannone and Vescera hit a pair of singles. Ryan Anderson came through with the clutch hit, knocking home two runs to allow F&M to claw within one of the Jays, 6-5.
Justin Drechsel shut the door in the bottom of the ninth, however, retiring the side with a pair of strikeouts.
Freshman Carter Burns improved to 3-0 on the bump this season, allowing three runs in 5.2 innings of work. Lynch and Wilhelm combined for five hits and five RBIs in the contest.
Today's sweep of F&M completed a perfect 6-0 week for the Jays, who have a few days off before returning to action on Tuesday against McDaniel at 3:30 pm in Westminster, MD.
